Wassappaning!

Hey all I'm new to spearboard and thought I might introduce myself. I'm originally from the south Texas gulf coast and have been in Socal since 2000, I did 10 yrs in the U.S. Navy and just recently started spearfishing, however I'm no stranger to the water, I've been surfing and fishing since I can remember I've been using a pole spear since starting and have been fairly successful thus far. This last saturday I shot a couple of opaleye and a decent sand bass out at the cliffs here in san diego, sorry no photos yet to corroborate my story I'm really enjoying myself and hope to talk, trade stories, and bullshit with some of yall in the future. Cheers,

Damian

What joseph said... seems to me to be a good way to learn the sport and have a few laughs along the way.

Nice to meet you Damian...When you get ready to jump into a speargun just ask who makes the best 1 for your needs

Tex, if you ever get a chance to come up north a bit to Laguna, there are plenty of us around as well. As an added benefit, Mr. Greysuit is notoriously hard to find

I've found opaleye to be much more edible if you scrape away the black layer on the inside of the ribcage. Still too much work though, save em for chum b/c they are pretty oily.

Re: Wassappaning!

Yeah I have to agree with you about the opaleye being oily, the two that I shot were fairly good sized I guess, approx. 12 to 13 " and after filetting them I can't say that I would be able to justify shooting them again.
