The big bang

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060317/...smic_inflation

"Physicists announced Thursday that they now have the smoking gun that shows the universe went through extremely rapid expansion in the moments after the big bang, growing from the size of a marble to a volume larger than all of observable space in less than a trillion-trillionth of a second. "

Now THAT is unimaginable...

Re: The big bang

Alright...my roommate and I were trying to wrap our brains around this: When looking at a star that is, say 4 light years away, you are seeing it as it was 4 light years ago correct? That light, that image, took 4 light years to get here. SO, why can't they solve the whole big bang thing since they know how old earth and the universe are within reason by just looking "back" with a really high powered telescope or something. I mean in theory if you look back to just after the big bang occurred then shouldn't you know what it looks like and what happened?

Re: The big bang

I mean, think about it. The white noise that you pick up on TV and radio is remanants of a big bang explosion. In one trillion-trillionth of a second, the almighty sharted a chili bean the size of a marble an it expanded into what is known as the entire universe.

The problem is that if the universe expanded as rapidly as being reported, then the expansion that occurred was faster than the speed of light. All that we can see using any telescope is limited by the speed of light. So, if the big bang occurred at a point beyond what we are capable of seeing, then we wouldn't see it. If it occurred within the point that we are capable of seeing, then we may have missed it. There's a whole lot of space to cover, and we've only really been looking for a short time.

Re: The big bang

Our universe could also just be a single proton in a single atom in a single cell on a piece of skin next to some ass hair on some fat, drunk bum of a whole other demention....Our world could end with one shart and a sloppy wipe of his dirty hand....

Not only that... but if I remember physics correctly, then if you excelorate somthing to the speed of light, then its energy and matter will expand exponentially....

So if the universe expanded as rapidly or more rapidly then the speed of light, and this caused the expansion, then if the universe slowed it would revert to its original size when it slowed to its original speed.... that is why I believe that the universe is still traveling at the speed of light or greater, and it may be getting bigger or smaller.....

Just my $.02 though.... so flame me if my theories are off the shelf...

P.S.
So.... the closest star is ~10 years away... that mean God could have ended the universe around us 9,999 years ago, and we would still not know about it....

Re: The big bang

I don't see the big deal on the whole big bang thingy. Taco Bell does the same thing to me every time I eat there. The stench from my innards goes from the size of a marble to filling someones nostrils in the blink of a blinking eye.

I think we're being hoodwinked by a bunch of eggheads trippin on something and getting back at all of us for making fun of them in high school. We're being made to wrap our brains around something that will just give us headaches, nightmares, etc and they're sneerking there asses off!
