First dive
Well after some pool practice, I made my first beach dive over the 4th of July holiday. We went to a friends Ranch house in Santa Ynez and I saw it was close to Gaviota on the map, so off I went. At first I just went out w/out the pole spear to see if there were any fish, and there were. Nothing big but at least I saw some life. Vis wasn't to good maybe 6' at the most in close and outside in deeper water it was real green and vis got worse. Close to shore in about 8'-10' of water is where I saw most of the fish, schooling YFC, BSP, Shiner surf perch. There was eel grass close to shore and this is where all the fish where, either right in the alley's in between the eel grass or on the edge of it.
I was getting pretty close to the fish and decided to go to shore and get the spear to try and spear my first fish. Just as soon as I got back in a decent size perch swam right up to the tip of the spear to investigate, I thought about letting him have it, but decided to be more selective and get one of the bigger ones, since I just got back in the water. Big mistake because I saw more fish but could not get a shot off. I stayed in the water for about 1 hour more searching for the fish but the tide was coming in the the vis was getting worse so I called it day without any fish. All in all it was a great first experience and can't wait to get back in the water. |
