La Mision and La Fonda report

I Was down south at a buddies place about a click south of la fonda this weekend and although this report doesn't include any harrowing tales of fish caught, I thought I'd comment on the quality of surf and clarity of water I encountered there. I woke up yesterday morning quite hungover to the sound of crashing surf and the pounding in my head and said the hell with it and suited up...... I used to live with my wife in TJ for 5 years and have surfed and fished up and down the northern baja coast alot, and the la fonda , la mision area has always left a bit to be desired as far as wave/water quality are concerned due to the river mouth right there. However saturday and sunday were the exception....I've never ever ever seen the pacific ocean look so blue or so clear, I'm not shittin y'all, when I was sitting on my board on the outside past the lineup the water was so beautiful I absolutely could not believe it. I stuck my head under water to take a look around and the vis had to of been every bit of 50 ft, I could of sworn I was in the caribbean. There was lots of bait in the water, quite a few porpoises as well, and I saw some of the biggest damn corvina I ve ever seen in my life, even with my healing / busted ear drum I think I could've taken some of those big boys in the 5 to 6 ft water they were hanging out in. Well gents I just thought I'd share with you what I thought to be a truly astounding couple of days in the water even if I didn't get to spear. Oh and the surf was an easy 7-8 ft on the sets and glassy all day long for you fellow surfers out there, In summary: great surf, crystal clear water, nasty nasty hangover ala buchanans whisky and corona (I'm still nursing that one)but all in all a great couple of days. Take care fellas

Re: La Mision and La Fonda report

Thanks for the report. I get down there a few times a year. It's amazing how well that place can hold a swell. Seen it double overhead and hollow. While eating breakfast at La Mision, there were at least 20 in-and-out tube rides.

Good to hear about the water clarity, next time I'll bring my speargun too!

Re: La Mision and La Fonda report

Tex,

I was at La Fonda Sat & Sun - outside patio mostly. Stayed at Cantilles Dorados which is about 1.5 k north of Puerto Nuevo. Did not dive south of La Fonda; but Sat & Sun morning tried the rocks a little south of Cantilles Dorados. Did not get the clarity you did - Sat morning was better and saw a sea lion and some bait. Water still a bit chilly. Only took a 1.5mm Riffe suit.

Send me a PM on the spot you went out.

Anybody else ever dove sugar loaf rock? It's that big rock about a mile offshore of Puert Nuevo. I dove there twice back in the 80's. Lots of sea lions there.
