Carmel / Bug Sur Freedive Charter

I was talking to one of the local charter boat captains a few days ago and mentioned doing a local freedive hunting charter. He thought it was a great idea and mentioned going South to some of the less visited spots (conditions permitting, of course).

We didn’t get into much of the specifics, but I’d guess we would need 10 to 12 people, at 70 to 85 per person for a half day charter. Of course, with charter boats the less desirable the timeslot the easier it is to negotiate these things. A SCUBA club I belonged to would on occasion get a charter boat at the last minute for a pretty good price if the boat was empty. Working with one of the local charters could mean some last minute trips, but some good deals as a result. Sunday afternoon is the hardest slot to fill on the local boats IIRC, so there could be some opportunities there as well.

I have 6 to 8 people who have expressed interest in this so it may be a real possibility, a couple of So Cal folks as well. If you are interested please post to this thread or send me a PM.

The charter will be open to any freedivers; camera folks or people that just want to get out to some nice sites to do some sight seeing.

Thanks,

Mark

Sundays work great for me if you need warm bodies to fill-out a boat.

Looks like we have enough to get something going. I'll call the boat owner tomorrow and get some specifics.

Just out of curiosity, what boat/capitan have you been talking to?

The Cypress Sea. The discussion came up during the PFI class.

Re: Carmel / Bug Sur Freedive Charter

OK, here is the skinny.

Boat would be an AM charter, most likely on 10/29 but possibly 11/5 or 11/19 if those dates work for more people.

We can bring a bunch of coolers, and we would need to provide our own food for the day (water will be provided). The boat would leave at 6:30 or 7:00 and have to be back at the dock at 1:30 - 2:00. Depending on how far south we go that would give us 2.5 to 4 hours in the water. We could possibly hit up to 3 spots in that timeframe if we wanted.

Cost for the charter is $1,300.00
Maximum # of people would be 20

I would say that we should try to get 13 to 15 as a minimum. 15 divers would be 86.00 each. If we have more it simply reduces the cost. Of course don't forget to include tip for the crew and all that. With my wife and myself that is already 2 so we only need 13 more to hit 15.

Of course we can do a little pot for biggest Ling or stuff like that if people are so inclined. At the very least we can hand the big fish around and take new avatar photos

The Captain would have the option of cancelling the charter the morning of if conditions don't look good. In that case you would get a refund.

If you are still interested shoot me an email at mark (at) cpvp.com.

Thanks,

Mark
