Packery South and a lil north....

ok so I FINALLY hit the south jetty...all I can say is WOW! I've been seeing some small snook and stuff on the north jetty. Besides the annoying oversized specks, I can't say I've seen any REALLy big fish. So today I get there around 9am. I'm in the water at 9:15. I grab two 12-15" mangroves right off the batt...yeah dinner baby! So I decide that I'd give the south jetty a try. Boat traffic was light, and a fisherman just made the swim. He was pretty dumb swimming with no fins, a baitbucket and a rod on one hand. He got 1/2 down before a boat stopped to tell him he's a dumb ass. The fisherman had the nerve to tell the guy....uhh that's why you need to slow down. Umm did I miss something? This guy is basically doing the same thing as crossing the freeway, then bitching at the cars going so fast! So I gathered up my float line...and waited for a moment to clear, and I'm off to the south jetty...

It was very nice visibility..as I'm crossing the channel I can see the floor of the channel. Nice sandy bottom all the way down there. I get about 30 yards from the far side and just about crap myself! I've just swam into a school of about 10-20 HUGE, not big, HUGE snook. They were almost as long as me, I'd have to guess some were over 36" to probably 48" in the largest. I couldn't belive it! On the channel side these guys crusied all day. I was actually getting pretty annoyed because they'd scare off anything around them. I told a few fisherman, but they were busy KILLING redfish of the south side of the jetty. I missed probably my longest shot I've attempted on a sheepy that was about 17" or so. They spook so quickly I took a shot further then what I'd typically shoot. Missed him by about 4" after he spooked from my nicely, sarcasm, rigged JBL. I spent the rest of the day cruising up and down the jetty and shooing off 30+" snook at 3' tarpon. I REALLY wished I could have shot one of those snook. I managed to once again take a spade from the tip of the jetty where they had a pretty substantial temp difference. Must have been 10 degrees different. Was actually kinda chilly. The tide switched and the wind picked up making the vis in the channel about 3' so I decided to pack it up and head home. Now I get to fillet some fish.

I tell you what. I was in the water at 9:15 and when i got out the fisherman said it was 1:45pm...my chest is a little sore from stretching it out, and my legs are a bit rubbery. I'll get a good nights sleep for tomarrows blue water adventrure.
