Question Stalking Technique??

Alright, I am very curious to understand, What are stalking techniques. I've been spearfishing for about 2 years now just off beaches where my parents are willing to drive me, so I'm not hardcore or anything. But I just don't understand this, Is it a skill? Am I possibly doing it and I just don't know?
I shoot mainly calicos out there. K, any information on this or how I can learn to "stalk" would be great
Thanks A lot.

Re: Stalking Technique??

There's many teqniques used mostly ambush style tactics...using kelp or eel grass to conceal you, Hiding over a ledge, Hiding in a crevace in the reef, Aspetto or lying on the bottom motionless waiting for fish to show. Also learning to move through the water quietly. All of theese are examples of stalking your fish once youv'e located where the fish you want are holding.

Re: Stalking Technique??

I have only gone after calicos a few times, but what worked for me was to be ready to shoot as I slowly moved around a rock wall or kelp. When they first see small parts of you (like your head) they dont seem too alarmed until they can make out what you are then they split, at least in my very limited experience.

If I spook a fish up here I will watch which direction it is swimming. They usually will swim away at an angle so they can keep an eye on you. When the fish swims behind a rock and cant see me for a few seconds I drop a little lower and hide behind rocks as I quietly try to get into a position where I can cut the fish off. This works really well for fish that are suspended a few feet off the bottom like vermilion.
