What is the best time of year to dip net shrimp in Southwest Florida?

Re: Dip netting shrimp

I believe around June is best on the flats. That's when the bigger ones come in to get jiggy wit it.

Re: Dip netting shrimp

April-May, and November. New moon around low tide is best. If the moon is out or if the tide is coming in they will be more skittish. Easy part is getting them, hard part is the cleaning! Red tide increase the shrimp numbers since it kills off their predators. We got an arseload last spring in Sarasota Bay.

Re: Dip netting shrimp

The only time of year I ever tried it was during Stone Crab season.
After you load up on claws, Hit the flats on the way back in
This year I'm gonna try a sane net.
November is good

Re: Dip netting shrimp

We use dip nets (flat head is better) and head lamps with 6V batteries. We put the battery in the drink holster of some fanny packs we found at WallyWorld. Works great!! Also the 6V are the screw on kind and we changed the wire ends to stay on the battery much better. 3 of us got our limit in 2-3 hours one trip last spring. That's alot of shrimp!

Re: Dip netting shrimp

Are you guys walking the flats or just anchoring near an inlet and using lanterns and dip nets? I was thinking that the beer to shrimp ratio would be much better using the anchored up method.

Re: Dip netting shrimp

We always walk the flats. Have done it with traps and from a bridge on the east coast for monsters but not here.

I'll have to look more in to it to find out exactly what is allowable,
But I think if it's smaller than a certain size, It's oK

Ahhh 10-4. I used one with the college taking samples in the bay but you can get away with a lot of stuff under "research" if you have the proper permits...
