How do I hook up a reel and float?

Sorry for the total dumb newbie question.

All the fish I've gone for so far have been small enough (tog, flounder, etc.) that sticking them with a sling or my gun was enough.

I'm getting ready to go for some bigger game (cobia, amberjack), which I'm told will drag my a$$ under which would suck if I'm freediving.

I understand that some folks use a reel and/or float. I'm not sure how that works.

Can someone walk through how to rig a spear to a reel and float?

My guess is that instead of tying the line from the spear to the gun, you attach it to a spool of line that is windable, and maybe that spool linked to a float somehow? Does the spool mount to your gun, do you carry it with you, or does it stay attached to the float at the surface and when you dive there's a line that goes from wherever you are up to the reel and float?

I've never seen the setup before, and forgive me for being such a dolt and not being able to figure this out on my own. Just trying to do it right and not get tangled up.

Spear line to gun, then line from gun to float. I've attached a picture from the Riffe page showing the line attached to the butt of the gun to the float. This system allows your to take aim, pull the trigger and let go of everything, hopefully removing the chance of getting tangled up, or loosing your gun to big game. Good luck!
