Working on a term paper
For my tree-hugging 101 class (environmental biology)
we had to choose an environmental problem, then look at how that problem directly affects a group or phylum, then propose a solution to said problem. I chose to talk about overfishing and i've been searching on Google but haven't gotten too far. Think you guys could provide some places to look at? I'm about to go and check out the FRA, but would like to know if there are other areas I can look for answers. Thanks a bunch!!! Nate P.S. Smilies rule!!!!!

Re: Working on a term paper
If its not too late to change problems, global warming would be easy. For instance, the front Page of today's LA Times says that rising sea levels and more severe storms are already ruining fresh drinking water in Bangladesh, and that an increase of three feet in sea level would cover one quarter of the country and displace 30 million people. They already have a population of about half that of the US living on land about the size of Iowa, so where would the displaced people go?
But maybe that topic is so easy that it wouldn't get a good grade or may not even be permitted.

Re: Working on a term paper
Personally, I would start with the National Marine Fisheries Service website. They have a large number of studies on fish populations alleged to be overfished your can download. Not saying all their stuff is accurate, but for a term paper I doubt anyone is going to give you too much grief about it.

Re: Working on a term paper
You might want to do water pollution and coral or something. I remember reading something on here recently about the damage that tire reefs are doing to the ocean in Florida, as well as the rest of the world.
Some basic sources for fish information would definately have to include fishbase. Recfin is another one if you want to look at catch rates for west coast species. Refresh my memory, if you will. I remember my saying to remember the order of things, but I forgot what some of them mean, phylum being one of them. For those of you out there who are curious, it was Kinky(kingdom) people(phylum) can(class) orgasm(order) from(family) good(genus) sex(species)

You guys rule. I'm gonna use that acronym or whatever (mnemonic?) in class just to give that hippy teacher a heart attack. Then my paper won't matter!!!!!!! Hahaha.

I absolve myself of any trouble that usage of aforementioned mnemonic device brings. That being said, git 'er dun.
