Leo Carillo

Does anyone ever dive at or around Leo Carillo? I just drove up there this weekend for camping but got turned away because it was full. But the beach was awesome, completely covered in kelp paddies and another beach before had atleast half a mile of kelp paddies. We're gonna drive up there again soon for a day of spearfishing. Any advice you'd like to give would be appreciated.

Re: Leo Carillo

not much going north but, south, there are some pretty good reefs out on the edge of the kelp out from the beach houses about a mile down and a few good reefs in the middle of the kelp although it can get pretty dark inside and hard to find spots without scouting...found a giant tabletop reef down there once with over a dozen giant dinnerplate red abs around it....good calico, halibut and some seabass at times..

My marine bio instructor in high school mapped out a stretch of underwater coastline in Malibu by putting on twin tanks, swimming out as far as he could, diving down and mapping everything on the way back in. He said he found a couple of reefs covered in abs that way.

Re: Leo Carillo

I drove there last August from San Diego to participate in the LA Fathomiers Scramble Meet. I remember that several of the LA guys went North that day about half a mile from the Northern most parking lot. I believe they went to a reef or some type of structure. The vis was bad that day and the surf was up. My partner and I had a bit of trouble with the two seater kayak we were using due to the surf. Nobody did very well that day due to the poor vis so they reschedualed the Scramble for a different day. You might try and contact Eric Banados, last years president of the LA Fathomiers 714 726-8409. I'm sure he would give you some better info on that area. I got his phone number off their club website so I don't think he will mind me passing it on.

Re: Leo Carillo

Bob,,

that is county line. It can be very productive there, but also lots of current. Be careful on the outside. Also always dive with some sort of dive marker. I have almost been run over there by boaters.
