NWS Survey- 1-2 but really 5-6
I am tired of getting wrong forceasts from the NWS. (for example: Saturday) Take the NWS online survey to let them know how you really feel. Here it is:

We went out of Panama City yesterday. The NWS said 2-3 feet with 5-10 knot wind. It was ok going out but once we got 5 miles offshore, winds were close to 20 knots and seas were 4-5 feet. We got the crap beat out of us. We couldn't even dive because we couldn't keep the boat anchored.

I dont know where you guys were but where I was 65nm offshore and never saw anything over a 4'er. My 2 cents. been doing this for a while and I know what 5 foot seas are. and those were not them. I highly doubt that if I was running around at 30 mph there and back and from place to place.

At 65NM, they were running about 3-4. I went 94NM out on Saturday, and the seas were damn tall out there.

Im with John on this one.
We were in the grounds and the seas were 4-6 with a couple of bigger swells. We could only do about 14 knots for the first 30 miles back from the grounds in a 40 foot boat. |

That sat. out in the grounds it is my belief that they were 3-4.
5-6 foot waves are VERY big. You will know when they are there.

Chris, I think you are right regarding the AVERAGE wave. It was the one every couple of minutes that was above average that was the ass kicker. I know on some of those, I was in the trough and could not see the horizon in any direction from the waves.
The buoy showed a just under 4' average for Saturday, but the buoy does not account for the Rogue waves every couple of minutes. |

I understand that the seas were really not 5-6, and most people overestimate the size. ( I have had people on board my boat when seas really were 1-2 and they thought they were 5-6. )
I too have been out in real 5-6 and they are no joke. My point was that the NWS seems to get it wrong pretty often, and that maybe some feedback to them would help. |

Brian,Chris
Where I was in the grounds the seas were running around 4 feet with the occasional 6 footer! We were in the 4 and lower 5 hundreds. There was no "over-estimation going on". I also have plenty of "experience" on the sea. They dont just hand out captains licences without proving hundred of hours of sea time.I have been a certified diver for 25 years and a licenced captain for 5 and have seen plenty of big and bigger seas. Anybody who has spent the hours on the water knows that sea conditions can sometimes change radically in the span of twenty miles or so. That is why this discussion comes up every know and then with one person claiming seas were this way and someone else a few miles up the coast saying,No, the seas were this way. Look at the wave model sometime and you can see what Im talking about . |
