Idiots.

I just got a call from a friend. News story just broke - a 150# BSB just washed up in LJ with a SPEAR stuck in it. DFG and LG' are looking for someone a gun and no shaft.

On wed. I ran into a couple of newbies on the beach at casa all excited because they'd seen a BSB the day before. I told them they were illegal. I wonder if it was the same guys.

It was on channel 8 - apparently the LGs don't have anyone there who was on duty. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.

Re: Idiots.

Thats messed up. What do you do if you find a 150#BSB on shore eat it? Are you allowed to?

Re: Idiots.

It's very very very illegal. It also makes us (spearos) look really bad too.

I'm not against taking GSB in MEX, where it's legal, but that sh!t is not good up here.

Re: Idiots.

That sucks. I was diving in La Jolly last week and saw 2 black sea bass. They were between 100 and 200 pounds. I was stoked because I had never seen a BSB before.

If you really think it could have been them, I'd call DFG and give them any description you can remember. A little "knock and talk" visit could get a confession.

Re: Idiots.

Re: Idiots.

Not only is it messed up for the BSB, but this is going to bring a ration of sh*t onto us (Spearos). I remember after the last idiot, everyone and their mother had to tell me not to shoot a BSB, fish killer, "it was probably you", you can't spear here, etc.....etc...

I have a feeling this incident goes hand in hand with the thread a while back about "holding your fire" and "knowing your target." Most likely it was someone new trying to get their first WSB and made a big mistake. 150lbs is a hell of a big fish

Sucks, Sucks, Sucks

Eric, I posted that "hold your fire" thread because I as afraid something like this would happen. I sucks. Something I worry about a lot is that my kids (if I have kids) won't be able to do the things my familys been doing for 70 years. The R&R guys have pretty good groups like United anglers lobbying hard for their rights, but us spearos are gonna get hung out to dry if things like this happen too often.
It just pisses me off. The water is not dirty in LJ right now like it was a month ago - you can see the freeakin fish. Even if it is bad vis, it's worth it to miss an opportunity on a big fish to make sure you dont do something that's gonna end up taking our ability to spear in the future.

Re: Idiots.

BSB are frequently filleted and sold in southern California local fish markets because commercial fishermen catch them on accident and rather than throw them away they are legally classified as saleable bycatch. Don't loose too much sleep over this.

Re: Idiots.

Hold on hold on.... we are not allowed to shoot the big black fish?

Maybe someone shot/tore it off at the coranados and it drifted.
