Team ***********.com (AKA: No one special) With Gils first WSB ;)

62 in Striker Gun by Gil at http://www.***********.com WSB 30 lbs.

Meet up with Gil, Russian Tony and Mike LB at Channel islands harbor at 6:00am on Monday. Loaded up the boat, and Mike LB forgot his energy drinks, so had to go back to the store a get them.

Left the harbor at 7:00, heading for Anacapa, thought we would do some YT hunting at Rats Rock, all the sport fishing boats where on the on other side at Hawaiian Gardens. I let the boyz drift for a while, and the only thing they saw was bait.
Got the boyz back on the boat, and headed over to yellow banks. We dove there for about a hour and still no fish. Then I decided to go to blue banks, we all jumped in. Mike LB shot a 40 lber and broke off, then Gil got a nice size calico, and I go the first wsb on the boat. Current changed and we moved to another spot.

Moved about 1/4 mile down on blues and found a nice fish spot. Lots of bait, and we all jumped in. I was crusing next to Gil and saw a good school of 30 to 40 lb fish. Didn't want to take a shot from the top so I dove down to 25 feet, and took aim. I spooked them. By that time I was in the was for a couple of hours and told Gil to hang out since the fish will come back around.

I swaim back to the boat, and took my wet suit off, I was done for the day. Gil, Mike, and Tony were still in the water. I heard a scream like a little girl. It was Gil with his first WSB.

I yelled over to Mike to help him. Gil was so excited that he could not hold his breath to get the fish. Mike when down and brained it, then handed it off to Gil. Gil swaim back to the boat, and I took pictures.

Once Gil got his breath he when out and with in 10 mins was on again, he didn't crimp his mono well enough and lost a shaft and mori tip.

Everyone can back to the boat and we called it a day. Was a nice smooth right home.

Don't ask about the second picture. It was hilarious as hell. All I can say is a wet deck, fish slime, and giggling like a giddy little girl don't mix. Falling into the motor well was bound to happen. I'm just glad I came away unscathed and we could all laugh about it.

The Mori slip tip blasted cleanly through the spine and lodged itself in the belly without penetrating all the way through. Mike and I were both surprised it kept fighting for so long after being terminated with a spine shot. The fish turned out to be 30 pounds. What a beautiful fish! I'm hooked. I'll definitely be making more trips to cali.

All in all, great outing and nice way to cap a busy weekend. Larry, thanks again for taking me out and putting me on the spots. Also to Mikelb for all the help with the Scramble Meet and driving the whole way on only three hours sleep. Mahalo Bruddahs, can't say it enough. Tony, really good to meet you and hope you hit your first WSB soon.

Back to the daily drone… Todd see you in SD.

Way to go bruddah! I guess the testing on the striker is coming along nicely! Now get back to work and get that EuroMax to market...

Wait a second... That big gun... How many bands? What diameter shaft? And it didn't punch the tip all the way through that fish? Something doesn't quite add up.
Or is that pretty routine for most of you?
Maybe it was a long (>20') shot? Or some other reason?

Chip,

Gil took the shot from the surface. It was about 40 + feet there. Long shot. maybe 25 to 30 foot shot.. Also tip hit the spine..

Fish were cruising on the bottom. surface water was 70 + degrees, thermo was 65 at 20 feet on my D3...

62 in 5/16 Ray Oder Shaft, Mori Tip, 36 feet of 400 lb mono, and 4 band 9/16 mori bands.

Thanks larry, that explains a lot. I guess I don't often take shots if I'm going to have to throw the shaft out that far. That's a pretty damn long shot, even for a big tuna gun. It's a good example of how much power is lost over that distance. Glad he was able to get the fish. Nice first.
