First, you gotta be a fathomier.
You get one for each fish.
ROUGHLY (IDK exactly)
Halibut over 20
WSB over 50
Yellowtail over 35

Re: Steve Redding Award

Looking at that list and picture makes me miss my friend. I grew up down the street from steve and next door to his best friend who grew up with him Tim. Steve taught me how to surf. I only vaguely knew that he was a diver also because every now and then I would see this huge lobster he brought home. I will definately miss his smile. He was such a nice easy going guy and I will remember the time we spent together with fondness. This sport is definately dangerous so please remember to dive safely.

I'll see you in the water,
Mike

Re: Steve Redding Award

Mike, right on!

I was thinking the same thing. Steve indeed was a good man. I was fortunate enough to interact with him on a few trips in Westerly. He worked as a deckhand (or dive master) at some point I think. He was always very generous information with big smile on his face. No ego what so ever. He did not have a single mean bone in his body. And he almost always nailed the biggest fish with his home-made-gun. Mother nature claimed a good man. RIP, Steve.

It is very noble of Fathomiers to have an award after him!

You call yourself a Fathomier...

Austin is right that you must be a Memeber of the Fathomiers. The award is earned by a diver that takes a 50lb+ WSB, A 35lb+ Yellowtail, and either a 25lb+ Halibut or a 10lb+ Calico. The fish must all be taken in California waters.

Re: Steve Redding Award

I recall reading on the freedivlist about Steves death, and it has always been in my mind as an example of the dangers we face. As I recall, he was in Pyramid Cove and shot a yellowtail that tied up at 70 feet. A scuba diver from the Westerly came by and offered to help him, but he waved the guy off.

Later, when they were counting divers, they saw his float so someone went looking for him. They found his body on the bottom at 90 feet.

I hope that this isn't considered disrespectful, but I think it shows that no matter that we are great divers, and no matter that we are considered to be the nicest guy in the world, shit can happen.

Some may think that no mention should be made of the circumstances of his death. But I'm more inclined to think that if his death can serve to save someone else, then it will not have been in vain. There could be no better result of a Steve Redding award than that it saves lives

The stuff we do is very dangerous, and we should be reminded of it.

All of a sudden, a diver swims up to my boat, asks if he can come aboard." Sure, come on in, have some water" It was Steve. He was excited to see a bent spear I had from losing a big YT, and we talked about the Fathomiers. He jumped back in, and a while later, I was leaving. And there was Steve, in the water, headed west toward??? the dive boat. I got him onboard, and told him I would drive him back to his boat. He laughed, and said " You don't have to go a couple miles out of your way for me." And that was the truth- he had swam over a mile and a half from the dive boat!!Steve was an inspiration to me, I wanted to have that kind of determination and endurance in my diving. It took me years, but I now have it. He also taught me a very hard lesson- it can happen to the very best of us. No matter how strong, nice, or talented you are, the ocean will enforce her rules upon you, so heed them well. So, thank you Steve for being a great inspiration and teacher.
