Charleston...Sat 10/13 ladies spearing
Great Day Saturday. We took my gf Katie and her class mate Norman out for their first dives ever on Jason's bot along with he and his fiance Rebecca.
Made one quick stop in 70 feet to make sure the greenhorns could both clear their ears and get all the way down to the bottom. Both were very comfortable. In fact, the first fish we saw on the dive was a school of about 5 Cobia. Both greenhorns thought they were sharks. Pretty cool customers considering they thought they were diving with sharks that whole first dive. Next dive was a few hours later in 95'. Again both greenhorns looked great. In fact, Katie was so relaxed she asked if she could carry the speargun for a while. She was trying to line up on a nice Gag and ended up spooking him off but was able to close on a Red Grouper and put a spine shot on it. I strung him up and lift bagged him to the surface. Weighed 12lbs 5oz. Great first kill. Both greenhorns also got to see more gags than you could shake a stick at, some nice cobia, a few juvenile red snapper, several juvenile hogfish, nurse shark, spotted morays, knobbed porgy, BSB's, lionfish, sea turtle, cowfish, other exotics, and even got to see me miss two lobster. After that dive Jason took his fiance down and she was able to kill a female hog. Jason and I were able to each shoot 1 gag each when our girlfriends weren't looking. We also managed 3 lobster. Jason got one that was probably pusing 10lbs. All in all a great first day for my girlfriend and Rebecca is shaping up to be a nice hunter herself. Katie with her 12lb Red Grouper. ![]() Rebecca with her hog.

The Carolina contingent of lady spearos is doing well! My good friend Rob Harding sent me this photo which is in the current new issue of SF Magazine. This is Rebecca who is mentioned above with her first hogfish speared at 107 feet which weighed 12 pounds. Great work all you Carolina guys and girls! Looks like fun Katie, Greg, Jason, Rebecca and Norman!
