Palos Verdes Dive Conditions?

I'm thinking about doing some diving this week in SOCAL. I would like to dive PV or get out to Catalina. Can anyone give me recent vis report for PV? Looks like weather should be good this week. I am thinking about hunting lobster at PV, maybe at night (Friday or Saturday). BTW, has anyone seen any WSB around PV in the last week?

I just got back from hunting the Channel islands for lobster the past three days. The swell was so light on Saturday that we could get in the shallow rough spots that are normally undivable. Vis on Saturday was epic and we caught our fair share of lobster and the urchins got their fair share of us.

The dive community is really small. I have been meaning to get in touch with Terry Maas and guess who drives by my boat on Saturday at Santa Barbara Island? Terry Maas! Terry was doing some freedive photography.

I will send out a few trip photos tomorrow.

Dave, we haven't met, but I got a call from Tom, sent you a PM.

Surely you're not opposed to SBI twice in one week?

I'll be out there today, I'm hoping it's going to be great vis with all the off-shore wind lately...

North side of PV has been divable but spotty the last three days. Swell picked up a bit yesterday afternoon. Plenty of bugs. No wsb spotted.

"SP Secret Spot" has decent vis at 6-10'. Lots of BIG bass both sandies and calicos tight to the beach on the west point. I dove the wall yesterday for 4-8' vis. Lots of life. Cleaned up on the rockfish. Came in to find DFG standing at the truck and doing a fine job of upholding the law Nice guy; stoked on our catch. Asked a lot of questions not pertaining to law enforcement.

Re: Palos Verdes Dive Conditions?

Thanks Steve, Mike, Joe, John, Mark and Machfish for giving me the scoop on your local diving! I hope to return the favor when your are up here in NORCAL. While I scuba dove for lobster last weekend, I think I will freedive only this week so I don't have to carry tanks down south. I will be watching the weather forecast to see if this rain slows down a bit. I will be in touch with you as we get closer.

Thanks again!

Dave, how big is that bug in your avatar? Look's like it could walk off with you if you weren't careful.

Sorry, no report. We got half way to Pt. Fermin before getting chased back by all the slop & chop from the storm coming in.

Actually I was wondering the same thing. The body on that monster looks HUGE!

Well, took the dog and the wife down for a walk at sunset and was bummed I opted for a nap after work today. Conditions out front looked suprisingly good. Of course, it's 930pm and pouring right now so tomorrow's probably out.

Re: Palos Verdes Dive Conditions?

That bug in the picture was a real 12 lber weighed on a good scale. I had caught one that weighed 11 1/2 pounds an San Nicolas before, but this was my first 12 lber. I caught it on the east side of Talcott Shoals in October. Maybe I am old and feeble, but I am starting to wonder whether we should have a maximum size limit on lobsters? In the state on Maine, the commercials have had a maximum size since 1934 and in some parts of Massachusetts, there is a max size limit as well for recreationals. Plus, it is common in some States that breeding females are off limits as well. In California, it is legal to keep berried females. I would love to know what the lobster divers out there on this list think? My own personal cut has been to put back the berried females and keep the rest. Should we be able to take female lobsters in CA? Should we have a maximum size on bugs? It scares me to think how old that 12 lber was.
