5mm vs. 3mm

Within the week I will be buying a wetsuit. I have a choice between a apetton black mimetic (3mm) or a omer green mimetic (5mm).
I have herd of many people changing from 5mm to 3mm as it gets warmer...but all i can afford is one all around suit. What do you guys think? Should I play it safe w/the 5mm?

I am cold natured and can wear a 5mm comfortably in a wide range of conditions. I would rather be hot than cold, and you can always let cold water in the suit if it gets too hot.

Re: 5mm vs. 3mm

I would defiantly play it safe and get the 5mm, especially for Massachusetts and New York.

Re: 5mm vs. 3mm

if you get a 5 you can use it spring, summer, and fall, and on really warm days you dont even need a suit, just shorts and a t shirt

Re: 5mm vs. 3mm

I have Green mimetic Omer 3mm. In 55 F I feel toasty in this suit. The only thing you have to use some soap to get in, but once slippery it gets on like pair of gloves. To get down in this suit I have to use about 18 lb of lead. I think 5 mm is overkill for NY, NJ area. In Summer time I'm using Omer Dahlak 1.5 mm and it is good ( for me) from 65 F and up.

Don't forget, if you get 2 pc 3 mm suit you will have total of 6 mm on your upper body since usually it is farmer john and jacket each 3 mm, so you will be pretty warm in 50-65F water. And being open cell it will stick to your body like a second skin, so no water will be sipping though any seams, unless you will let it in ( and it gets hot in it, trust me) But on the other hand, it all depends on how you able to tolerate low temperature. For me, if i feel cold with 1.5 mm suit , I just wear sleeveless jacket 3 mm with hood underneath the suit and it's enough, using just 8 Lb of lead.
Here you can see suits I'm using:

Got it from Leisure Pro in New York. Their Phone# 1-212-645-1234
Talk to Ben or Sol, tell them that Igor sent you, and they'll give you good price. I think they don't have it in stock, but they will order it for you in a week or so. Just make sure you know your size, otherwise call Mark or Eddy Labochetta from Omersub at 1-800 853 1911 and they will help you to find the right size.
You may also find size chart here:
http://www.omerdiving.com/product.aspx?product=197
And don't forget to pour some soap inside the suit or they will never accept return of damaged suit :0)
