Re: Gone to Puertocitos

It appears to be an egg sack for a type of bottom dwelling shark, or more likely a skate...

That was a sweet report thanks for sharing... The pics really came out well too, capturing the true beauty of that part of Baja.

It could be an shark egg. You can buy them in the fish stores in San Diego

Awhile back I remember hearing that the shark egg cases are the ones that are spiral shaped and the rays/skates have the rectangular ones. Don't know how much truth there is to that though

Re: Gone to Puertocitos

It's sometimes called a mermaid's purse. It's the egg case left over from the hatching of a shark, ray, or dogfish.

The spiral ones you are referring to are from the Horned Shark, and the Port Jackson Shark. Those are the only two I know of that have spirals. Most other sharks have the purse, and some give birth to live young.

Re: Gone to Puertocitos

The weirdest thing just happened. My five year old daughter, Trinity, just got home and she loves "the Little mermaid". So I showed her the egg case and asked her if she knew what it was. She looked at me and said, very matter of factly, "that's from a shark or a ray". I was shocked, but continued. They call it a "mermaid's purse". She looked up from her school papers that she had carried in and laid on the floor and again, very matter of factly said, "I know". They're teaching this kind of biology in kindergarden??? I'm just blown away.

I'm jealous. That sounds like a great week. It must have been really satisfying to have your patience pay off especially on a solo trip.

Re: Gone to Puertocitos

Patience? I was about to throw myself on the ground and have a temper tantrum. I almost left and went home without diving. I'm pretty glad that I went ahead and drove all the way to Gonzaga. Next time, I want to go further. There's just nothing like it.
