Pinfish Traps

Anyone have success with pinfish traps? What type of bait is best? Should it be set out the night before or just leave it out?
We just ordered one of THESE in hopes of some good grouper bait.

I have made a few out of chicken wire. They look similar to the one you just ordered. I bait them with 1/2 of a blue crab. Drop them on or right next to a grass flat(from 5-10'). You might need to find the areas the bait are around with a little experimenting.

Good luck.

not blowin smoke up your a$$ here, but before u put em out. go get a cheap can of red spray paint and paint em. don't ask. it works. you'll catch 10 times more in the red one than the dark ones. hell put two out and see if it it ain't true. don't know why but it really helps. we just use fish heads and back bones and catch all the pinfish we need. put em out the night before is best. around here the damn otter's will find em and get use to hittin them every night if u keep it baited and out. hope this helps

I agree. I've seen 'em painted. Of course a dock or bridge works the best. I've left mine out near boat ramps the night before, in a place where nobody can really see it, and took it with me in the morn.

These pics are from the trap I made. The opening is like a tunnel that gets narrower at the end. It works very well.
