Skyway bridge

Is the base of the bridge worth diving? Whats the average depth?
Thanks

Re: Skyway bridge

The current rips, low viz and big bulls! There are a ton of stonies there and quality sheepshead. If you go make sure its slack tide, best of luck.

You may get run off by the police or Coast Guard. After 9-11 they closed down the bridge area to diving and fishing boats. Before you plan a trip you may want to contact Coast Guard St. Pete and check on the status. It could save you a great deal of money and time spent trying to convince them that you are just diving and not trying to blow up the bridge.

Re: Skyway bridge

It takes a little balls to dive the main supports. Like everyone said big bulls frequent the area. I have dove it and produced quality fish and even won a Spearing/H&L tournament back in December from there.

In the middle of the channel I think the depth is something like 33-37, but diving in there is very dangerous due to the heavy volume of container ships zipping in and out of there with very deep drafts. Around the main supports is covered up by H&L guys and dolphins itching to steal your catch. Also there are a few JOOfish hiding in there waiting for a easy meal.

Re: Skyway bridge

Look to Skyway Gary, he’s knows his stuff. All of these posts are correct. BECAREFUL… I balls up and dove it. Tons of wire, big ass fish and large ships make it crazy… I was too worried about everything else going on I forgot to focus on spear fishing.

Re: Skyway bridge

Make sure it's a slack current the Skyway is the only place I've done a drift dive in Tampa Bay.

Re: Skyway bridge

if you've got a boat i'll show you a hot spot in the bay next winter when there are no sharks around.
