1/2/03 The FishCollector + Winter + Middle Grounds = Lot's O Dead Fish
The Crew
-Capt Ej Barret (deepfish) Capt Chris Hudgens (Financial Advise) Dave May (diver dave) Jim Hohler (intowin) Rick Bateman (oldbateman) and yours truely Boat -The Fish Collector Weather Conditions -1ft or less wind east at 5 to 10 calming as the day goes on Dive Site -The Florida Middle Grounds We lit out of Johns Pass at an early 5:30 and was sitting on our first wreck at 7:30. The boys went down and started wacking jacks snaps and large blacks. The 142ft depth made their dive short so we quickly jumped over to a giant gags hole. Dad and I went left Chris went right. I got some great footage of dad stoning a nice gag. Then I set the camera down and start whacking hogs and mangos. A nice jack swims by and I put a free shaft in him. He starts swimming off so I begin the chase and catch up. I grab the shaft on both ends and the jack decides to remove my mask and regulator with his tail. Let me tell you friends a dive can be going absolutely wonderful and in 3 seconds change to life threatening circumstances. I get my reg back in but the adrenaline has already blown my ablilty to remain calm. I start telling myself, "you've got plenty of air still, you are breathing all you have to do is come up slowly." Wasn't working, I'm in full on hyperventalation. I'm about 2 seconds from hitting the inflater hose just so when I pass out they can find me on the surface. My logic behind that was I'd rather be bent then drown on the bottom. I've got my DAN Preffered card they can put me in the chamber but I have to be alive for them to do that. Well I did make it up and with a safety stop thrown in. I left my camera on the bottom but another diver can easily find it where I left it. For the rest of the day I decide that I won't be freeshafting any more jacks. The remainder of the day went smooth with the only thing getting hurt was mass quantities of gags. Dad and I did a drop on a small ledge and once i got 40ft down I started noticing fish in the water column. I thought they were probably mangos. I get down 20 more feet and see that it's 100 gags all legal sized and more than half going 20#'s or better. The Grounds in the winter is an amazing thing. Every other drop I did had more gags then I could shake my slinging stick at. We pointed the boat towards home at 3:30 and made a mad dash home on slick calm seas. They'll be posting the pics later today and I'll put the video up soon.

Same goes for me on the dive to the grounds. Thanks EJ and Chris for allowing me to go with you. If there are ever two top Pro's you are them. Even though I had a couple of snafu's on my first two tries to get to the bottom you wouldn't let me give up. After that when I got to the bottom the scene was great, I didn't shot but one fish but I did find a nice camera with some great footage on it. Thanks again guy's for allowing me to be part of that day.
You are udoubtedly the worst diver I have ever heard of! Yes but at least you heard of me! Diver Dave |

OLD BATEMAN, Your Sunset / Speargun Photo is Just Primo ! It speaks volumes about your trip on the FISH COLLECTOR . With those strange "ribs" on Capn' EJ's right wrist, he looks like he is wearing a "still suit" from the movie DUNE. he, he . . .
