CA vs. Mexico Fish Take Rule Conflict..

Recently, a Ca diver had some problems at the border upon return from a spearfishing trip down Baja way..He speared a Gulf grouper (legal in Mexico) and tried to bring the whole fish back...illegal to do...you may possess 2 black sea bass (supposed to have documentation on where the fish came from) from Mexico when entering the U.S. ..it is illegal to possess Gulf or Broomtail grouper when entering the U.S., even if it is legal in Mexico... fortunately, customs just warned him, rather than notify F&G..

Bob, is this in the F&G regs anywhere? I've never heard of or read this that I can recollect.

It says in the regs you can poses 2 bsb , but under the broomtail it gives no provisions for taking one it just says may not be possesed. I was wondering after I saw a pic of some divers that speared them.I guess they made quick fillets to bring back.

Re: CA vs. Mexico Fish Take Rule Conflict..

Pretty interesting topic here. I often catch broomtail and gulf grouper in Mexican water (with Mexican fishing license) and didn't have any problems at the border. I always fill out the declaration form and considered my action to be legit.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/declaration_form.pdf

Any further guidance on this topic would be appreciated.

I was reading my current issue of Western Outdoor News and they addressed this exact thing in the DFG question and answer section.
I'm sure that's what Bob is referencing
