You can delete the "only" part from your post, that's a nice fish for a first or a 100th.
Nice job and I like the light on the end of the gun.

Re: Bagged my first Ling today!

I took a heavey duty D-ring that goes on your weight belt and taped it to the gun with packing tape and then taped the light to the D-ring... Not even remotely elegant but it does the job...

FWIW
I would recomend NOT attaching your light to your gun.
There are many holes you cannot view with the light attached to the gun.
You want to be able to move the light independently from the gun, as many times you have to tip it or turn it in a manner that being attached to the gun will not allow.
It is not that hard to hold the light with left hand and shoot with right, just takes a little getting used to.
Lings are not known for being spooky, so therer usually plenty of time to get on target.
my two cents

Agree!!
I used to use one of the UK side-mount mask lights and stick my face down into the cracks/holes to search for lings. That doesnt sit well with eels!!! That little light wasnt very powerful either but I am damn lucky I didnt get bit. I now use the larger version I think its the UK c4(??). I use it in my left hand and shoot with the right. Yes it sometimes gets wrapped in kelp but if you keep it in hand its still pretty easy to equalize and gets caught up less.

I use a mask attached light too. I set it so the water pressure turns it on around 10 ft or so. This saves batteries and is easy with the twist top. It isn't the brightest but it does help! I also hold another brighter light in the other hand.

This is very solid advice. If my light breaks or I forget it I feel really handicapped. I started carrying a second light on my kayak just in case i lost my primary light. In my opinion having a good light is more important then having a good gun when hunting for lings.

Nice fish! Fish and chips or fish tacos are pretty good with lingcod I think it is a little lean for the BBQ.
