Middle Grounds, Wed & Thurs, 14th & 15th

Took a last minute two day trip to the Grounds to spearfish and do some advanced classes with new member "divebuddy" from Fort Walton Bch.

Gags & AJs are everywhere south of 28:30 and it's clear, about 50' to 60' vis.

Ran into Headhunter out there and he had come from the north where vis was about 10'. yuck!

66*F was better than I expected too.

Here's divebuddy's first hogfish, a mere 20lbs! (Species not found in the panhandle.)

Middle Grounds

The seas were less than 3' Wed but picked up to 5' on Thurs. But as planned they were at our backs so it wasn't too bad. Made 21 to 22 knts the whole ride home.

Check out this pretty 22 lbs fireback!

rigdvr,

I'd kill to have some of those rigs out by the Grounds! Do you ever put on a tank? You'd like the grouper & hogs we get so thick out here. I'll be exploring out here on some deep wrecks and springs for freediving surface fish this spring and summer.

Hell yes, I'm doing the HD Rodeo again with David D.

Is the AL Open dead this year for the end of May?

I saw the Redneck Riviera post, that Mike Wade put up for April 30, but I don't know if I can make two trips in spring.

do I ever use tanks? Well does a bear have hair and shit in the woods??? Last time I dove out of St. Pete area I was molested by jewfi...err, I mean Goliath grouper.

Think we are setting up a freedive team for the helldivers now that they have better rules(use of a float, ect.) and a bluewater category.

I do need to come down there and check out the grounds sometime...looks like alot of fun but I dont know what Id do when I could actually see the bottom...or if Id even make it there without having a rig leg to follow!

Hey JR,

Spearfishing in Open Water class? Although you and Mike were pretty much ready, I don't think SDI would approve.

This was a Grounds trip which also included Advanced EAN & Decompression training. No conflicts at all. Spearfishing could actually be viewed as narcosis dexterity testing & training.

Did you get nitrox certified yet?

Chad
