Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log..

Halibut hunters alert...grunion run tonight thru Sunday night...bigger models of wsb showing again at Catalina..four ghosts over 50 were taken ashore in Avalon on Monday night..Dreamer limited out on big fish Monday..know of one fish taken that weighed 67 pounds...leave those small reef guns at home rather than waste a large female full of eggs...bluefin tuna, albies and some yellowfin are at the 180 mile mark below San Diego...sandbass showing with no sign of giant humbolt squid so far...some 500 lb black sea bass sighted off the v's...largest I have ever seen was about 700 or 800 lbs..almost a pure silver color he was so old...saw him one August when I was near the v's and dropped down into a school of 12 fish hanging in some kelp strands..smallest went about 125 up to the big one...quite a sight to see!....
..Trivia question: which sea animal has the largest eye for visibility?...The eye on the giant squid caught off New Zealand in a net ( squid was 26' long) measured 11" across...

Maybe we'll get lucky and see one or two ghosts at the bluewater meet this weekend!

According to an article in the UT here in San Diego, the grunion run ends tonight and they got their info from Scripps. I sure wish they didn't print this info though.

Re: Trivia from Bob Ballew's Log..

remember, grunion runs will appear at different times in different areas..it will depend on high tide conditions/timing, occuring at that particular area...my tide book shows the next L.A. area run for the 20-23rd while F&G shows it for 2 days earlier...probably depends on what area the info comes from... F & G in Sacramento over to Morro Bay?....
