Waxed Thread / Line

Anyone have a good source for waxed line for tying your own bands? Thanks.

I looked for a while and couldn't find any and finally made my own: took some cheap nylon string and dipped it into melted wax (that I melted on the stove in a soda can). Kinda messy but cheap and easy.

For years I've bought mine at West Marine, but sometimes it wasn't very thick and I felt like I needed to double it. Then I noticed that Daryl Wong's bands came tied with some nice looking black stuff, so I asked him what it was and ordered a roll. Its 802B on this page.

Of course it comes in a 500 yard roll. At about a yard per band, I've got a lifetime supply and can leave it to my dive buddies, but maybe you are a big younger. With postage it cost me $49, but its nice stuff and I'll never have to worry about West Marine being out of stock.

You seem to under-estimate my willingness to spend $8.00....
Tell me you've never taken advantage of a situation which yielded "something" that was "kinda messy but cheap and easy"?

Yeah, but I think Daryl said he goes through a roll in just over a year. I make some bands for myself and friends, but I don't have that many friends.

Joe
Hi Joe/Bill/Others,
I have to ask why the small reels of waxed tie line that are sold by LDS's are not a consideration?

I do not use waxed line myself when I tie bands, but in the shop we do carry the small and large reels of waxed tie line from Riffe and I believe from Trident as well.

So, there seems to be a few commercial sources available for small amounts of tie line, but all I can guess is that maybe those particular lines are not that great, either price or quality wise?

Please advise.
Thanks,
Mike.

I wasn't even aware that dive shops sold waxed line. I have a life time supply now, but I'll have to check my shop today when I go in for a battery kit for my D3.

For $5.35 this might be worth trying:

I get mine from Ray Odor.

Bill,
Whatever you do, do not apply for a job in a LSD.
If my associate used 3 ft of tying material, to tie a band, I would kick his a...e from here to next week :>)
1 ft would be more like it.
Regards,
Mike

Re: Waxed Thread / Line

Thanks Mike, I'll keep that in mind.

BTW, I did go to the local dive shop. It carries lots of Riffe guns. When I asked for waxed twine, they referred me to West Marine.

Re: Waxed Thread / Line

well if you think of it this way, you have to tie both sides of the wishbone, so he is only using about 18 inches of waxed twine per tie. but thats still 50% more than what you use....
