Most tournaments are put on by local clubs, dive shops, etc - don't you have any active clubs up there?

I guess we don't have any active clubs or shops around here, at least none with anyone monitoring this board. I am still a relative newby to the sport and have never been to a rodeo or any other spearfishing tournament, but I would be there in a second if there were any closer to home. (not sure I can swing the trip down the coast but I am sure going to try)

The Helldivers rodeo in New Orleans is usually around the beginning of June.

if you can make it, the Alabama Open is definately a good time. Lots of nice folks to meet and a heck of a prize table to boot.
The helldivers is awesome as well but man those guys are some hard core steel slingers... |

You're not kidding about that, I just read "The Helldiver Rodeo", and assuming half the stories therein are lies and another quarter are gross exagerations then they would still be very bored and unimpressed with my best day on the water. I would recomend the book to anyone that hasn't read it. It even boasts a review by Ted Nugent on the cover.

the next book...
Doesn't Humberto Fontova have another book coming out soon? I can't remember what it's called but I seem to recall it was something about hunting. I enjoy reading his articles in LA Sportsman.

Humberto's new book is "The Hellpig Hunt", the following link gives a brief review & other info. I haven't read it yet, but it sounds great and I will have to pick up a copy soon.

Got Hellpig for Christmas. Didn't put it down until I finished it. Great book.
