Was out paddy hopping yesterday and saw a pod of small whales or big dolphins. Googled and couldnt find the species. Saw the common dolphin in its school of 500 +. But couldnt identify this one pod.

We were out 7-10 miles and saw a pod of 10-14 big dolphins / whales. They had the look of bottlenose dolphins but 2x to 2/5 times the size. Also had the look of a pilot whale but didnt have the front lobe or dark skin of a pilot whale. They were very light grey and what seemed to be a white side. They had a bunch of scratches and teeth marks. The males had a bottlenose dolphin dorsal fin and 2 females in the group looked to have a small dorsal fin more streamlined. They werent the friendliest around our boat either. We would pull up on them thinking they wanted to surf and they would go deep and pop up 20 yards away. They did this twice before we left them.

Not orcas either.

Anyone know what kind of dolphins / whales these were???

Yep that sounds like rissos, they are usually slower in the water and usually shy but we slid up next to a pod a few days ago.

Yeah, the Rissos are not nearly as social as the common or bottlenose.

Alot of people will mistakenly call them pilot whales or even Belugas because some of them will have so much white.

yep I saw a lot of those last sunday 6-8 miles out of san onofre they're pretty cool!!!

Hit the nail on the head, Risso dolphins it is. Thanks, I didnt know but found it amazing.

** No useful reports, took the boat from Dana curved out 7-10 miles and headed south a little past Carlsbad. Swung into Oceanside and filled up and got hooked up with some free bait. (The kid at the fuel dock is awesome and told his buddies to give us some free bait).

Then headed out again 15 miles this time and headed north. After that made a straight shot to dolly parton (Or what ever stupid name people give it "HL" I like Dolly cause when driving the 5 my dad used to say look "Dolly") viz sucked then headed home.
