Calories burned per Hour
I was in a physical fitness seminar and was about to fall asleep when the instructor mentioned that the highest calorie burn rate exercise which one could perform for 20 minutes was Running, followed by skin diving.
I used the information he shared and if one eliminates running at an impossible speed (99% of of the population cannot keep that speed) such as 10 mph for an hour at a time, Skindiving is far and away the only rational exercise most of us can sustain for hours at a time and which burns over 1500 calories per hour. Imagine how many calories we burn just swimming around fighting currents trying to get that grouper that holed up. No wonder I'm hungry for two days following a day of skin diving. I remember several threads years ago in which we assumed or attempted to calculate the calories we burn per hour, I thought I would share what a college professor is teaching as factual information. Exercise Type Calories running, 10 mph (6 min/mile) running 1791 skindiving, fast water activities 1791 bicycling, >20 mph, racing, not drafting bicycling 1791 running, stairs, up running 1679 running, 9 mph (6.5 min/mile) running 1679 running, 8.6 mph (7 min/mile) running 1567 skiing, cross country, >8.0 mph, racing winter activities 1567 running, 8 mph (7.5 min/mile) running 1511 running, 7.5 mph (8 min/mile) running 1399 bicycling, stationary, 250 watts, very vigorous effort conditioning exercise 1399 skindiving, moderate water activities 1399 |

Re: Calories burned per Hour
Interesting! I always thought that freediving burned alot of calories, since most of the time after the dive we always are hungry as hell.

Re: Calories burned per Hour
calories burn rate depends also of the body surface and of the weight...
most calories burning sports: -speed skatting: 1000 cal per hour!! -bicycling from from 20 to 40 km per hour: 700 to 900 cal per hour -jogging at about 10 km per hour: 800 cal per hour -skin diving: about 800 cal per hour -rowing: 700 cal per hour -climbing/ squash/ : 600 to 700 cal per hour sleeping: 60 cl per hour ![]() |

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I can't possibly imagine skin diving (at least not spear fishing) burning more calories than swimming laps. Often times I just float at the surface breathing up or floating with the current trying to look a bit more natural all nice and toasty warm in my wetsuit. That said I do attribute some of my recent weight loss and improved health to diving.
Interesting info. Thanks. |

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I agree with 5869,
with spearfishing you breath up, bend over, and kick twice then coast down. Which shouldnt burn too many. But, Under Water Hockey would absolutely qualify for the "fast-paced" skin diving. I'm constantly trying to get a rest!

Re: Calories burned per Hour
The reason we burn so many calories is because our entire body is trying to keep 98.6 degrees. It's not because we work so hard in the water. Even if the water is a comfortable/warm 80 degrees that's quite a bit colder than your body temp. If you are warm and toasty in your wetsuit you don't burn as many calories.

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I should have added my weight, I'm 228. If you're lighter you will burn less. I also have a denser muscle mass which lends itself to more calories per hour. Either way, for a fun time and doing something that burns a ton of calories a day, you really wouldn't want to do much else eh, unless you have someone to share a bedroom with.

Re: Calories burned per Hour
Spearfishing has to be a lot of calories per hour but not only because of the exercise we do. In cooler water your body is constantly burning calories to keep your body temperature up, so after factoring those in I would say on some days spearfishing could burn an incredible amount of calories.

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I think I burn more calories surfing or body surfing than I do free diving. I thought it must be that you have to sprint to catch waves and paddle or swim like hell if you're about to be caught inside, tired or not.
Free diving I can cruise, relax and dive when I'm prepared. Unless there's a big school of snappers or something that just showed up....hah. |

Re: Calories burned per Hour
Dave Mullins ("Mullins" on spearboard) was featured along with Fran Rose in this TV spot in NZ. Fran touches lightly on why freediving is a great workout. I don't have enough education in the field to say weather she is correct or not, but if nothing else, it's a great video!

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I lose about 10 lbs every summer from diving just once or twice a week.
We actually spend about 5 to 6 hours swimming everytime we go. |

Re: Calories burned per Hour
I've heard that once your body uses up the O2 in the blood stream, it then starts taking it from fat cells. Don't know if it is true or not but sounds reasonable enough.
Maybe its not the burning of calories but reducing fat? (or a combination) |
