If you are a newbe, there is some great spearing right on the point and around the corner from there. You will find some nice snappers, triggers, cabrillas and all kinds of great fish to put on the table. Fish will range between 3 and 15-20 pounds. There are also some rooster fish that can get much bigger than that. As far as a panga for a trip like that, you really don't need to spend top dollar for the best captain as all you need is just for someone to drop you on the reef and stay with you. Just ask/shop around for pangas that will take you out to the point and such.

Do not get talked into going way outside for game fish. First of all its very expensive, second is that the weather and conditions are very hit and miss, but most importantly you can easily get yourself killed out there if you are newbe and are not prepared with the right equipment.

Have a blast there and good luck.

Re: Diving in Puerta Vallarta (PV)

talk with sebastian from punta mita expeditions.

www.puntamitaexpeditions.com

the website is awesome, it really shows you what you can expect there, the types of fish they can put you on. They scuba dive alot (sebastian and tyania are both dive masters) and they know all the local reefs and holes (areas for great spearfishing). Sebastian spearfishes there year round so he'll be your best source of knowledge.

they are a great group and will take care of you.

PM me if you want some more info

will

Put some thought into Seaholic's posts.

Another thing to consider is that if you're in the PV proper area, then you'd be ~30 miles from where these guys are recommending.

PM Khill. I think he had some luck spearing down there in May.

The original post sounded like he was going to PV and wanted to do some spearing while he was there, which is maybe different from planning a trip for the purpose of spearfishing.

I totally agree. Much better diving (and higher payoff) elsewhere.

Re: Diving in Puerta Vallarta (PV)

Vallarta is an armpit tourist trap.
The region less than an hour north (rent a car) is much nicer. The area south of Saiulita (the town its self is a surf/frat s-hole) has some very nice beaches that I have speared some fish on.
Litibu is one that you should check out if the giant resort that was being planned for there has not destroyed it. Sea turtles, big rays, Bait balls right off shore, and lots of reef fish too. For me, I only took little "one meal" fishes (triggers are my favorite-cook directly on the coals as their thick skin protects the meat) as I had no refrigeration where I stayed.

To be honest although I enjoyed diving there, the surfing at Punto Burro (just south of Punta Mijta) was way better than the diving.
I was told that the diving the big island (sorry cant remember the name) off Punta Mijita is really good. I couldn't afford the panga fees but if you can I'd check it out.
