Laguna 10/11/2008 AM report

Went out to Crescent bay with Kelsea and ryddragyn this morning. Water was nice and clean with a bit of surface chops. Vis was ~15ft all around. According to a scuba diver, surface temp was 64-65F.

We were hoping to check out Deadman's Reef but got distracted by a pod of dolphins at the beginning. One came within 5ft to check me out. This was the first time I came this close to one. The thing was big.

Deadman's isn't as far a kick as I had thought. It's also not as deep as some people made it out to be either. I could clearly see several structures from the surface. It had a lot of life, but unfortunately, I think all the bigger residents have been picked off.

Another cool thing I saw to day; at ~60ft, there was a thick layer of planktons that together with a huge concentration of feeding blacksmiths made me think it was the bottom floor. As I sank deeper, the "floor" opened up and engulfed me. I would've enjoyed the experience a lot more if the thermocline wasn't so nasty. The cold really permeates into your suit.

Hopefully, Kelsea and ryddragyn can chime in with a report.

The bigger fish are not picked off of Deadmans' reef. Not by a long shot. I could show you......but then I'd have to kill you!!!

Oh man, I wish I'd gone. I was pretty convinced it would be terrible. I guess I wouldn't have been able to go anyway, since my gf got mugged lastnight and we had a whole resulting fiasco to deal with.

Want to try for next weekend? I'm up for Friday, Sat, or Sunday.

Haha. When I wrote that, I was thinking to myself, 'maybe it's my fault and I'm not stealthy enough...' I guess your reply reaffirms that. For what it's worth, I see just about the same amount of goats at Deadman's than other outer reefs, they're just marginally smaller.

It will usually kick out a fish or 2 over 20lb when I go there. I don't take one each time, but there are days when I will see 3 different ones that big. And every time a big one gets taken, a new one sets up shop pretty quickly within a day or 2.

Big reef fish move a LOT more than people would imagine; we look at a great looking reef, and say " If I was a fish, I would NEVER leave this place!!" But in reality, they move in and out like a reef is a hotel, not a house. They keep a lot of rooms around town, and never stay in the same place for a week non stop, even though it may be their primary residence.
