First Mahi

My friends Jay, B.J., and I decided to try some bluewater because we heard that some Mahis (Dolphin) were at the Northern FADS. We left Hagatna Boat Basin at 11:30 and went to number 1. I was still untangling flashers when I heard Jay yell. He was hooked up to a Mahi before I even loaded. There was a lull in the action then a group of 6 showed up and I started sprinting after them. I was anxious to get my (FIRST MAHI). Finally one turned toward me and I shot it in the tail. It struggled for a bit and all of a sudden I became a Bluewater Hunter I guess. This is the sh$%#! B.J. was our boat man and he did a great job chumming and avoiding the float lines.

We moved on to Ledge bouy and instantly happened upon some nice sized Mahi. Jay shot a 17 pounder and I took aim on a small 6 to 8 pounder when I heard Jay yell, "Behind you!!" I turned around and saw about 30 big Mahi passing about 10 feet from my spear tip! Of course I panicked and squeezed a shot off on the nearest one that was the smallest (about 12 lbs.) when I should have held out for the 25 or 30 pound Bull. Most of them were more than 15 pounds. The shot was solid and I horsed it in realizing I probably blew my chance. I'm not going to sweat it because it was my first time. We had a blast!! It was incredible and we didn't see a single shark. Jay ended up with 4 and I had 2. I can't wait till wahoo season!

Hows the trip going Ron! You shoud have been there dude! How did you guys do in Hawaii? Tell those guys I said what's up!!

Here they are called Mahi Mahi just as in Hawaii. If you were to say dophin everyone will think you are reffering to marine mammals. During the season we catch them by the tens of dozens (handlining) and many charter captains make some extra money. They are so much fun to hunt! I highly recommend Mahi Mahi to anyone who has not speared one yet.

I'll second that recommendation! I still remember my first dolphin (only 3 months ago lol) truly an experience to remember.

SERprise, I have a couple. One is to try avoid jumping in on a (FAD) when there are boats trolling or baiting. It's going to make somebody upset. The best thing to do is contact them if possible or wait until they've gone. We don't want to give ourselves (Spearos) a bad name. As long as we are respectful and considerate there shouldn't be a problem. There are a few people that will get all bent out of shape no matter what we do but that's just how she goes I guess.

The other piece of advice is to be weighted so that you can hover at a shallow depth like ten or fifteen feet. I was under weighted and I had to exhale to stay down. It's not bad but I'd feel more comfortable if I had just a bit of air. Mahi hang around close to the surface so I had get used to it.
