Wong questions???

Hi there brothers...hope everything well with all's business everywhere. I recently purshased a wong 55 CF open track hybrid on this board from Diver X (Aloha Kip). I love this gun but have several questions about its usage. I used it on saturday and got a very nice fish with the two 9/16 bands it came with. I have 5/8 rubber and was thinking to make some bands for this gun...what would be the best length for 5/8 rubbers in this wong? Should I use three or tw 5/8 bands on it??? Thanks in advance.

I've had that gun for about 10 years, and I've always used three 9/16" bands on it. I haven't tried 5/8", but I think that might overpower it. The fish in my current avatar was taken with that gun. I think 24", 25" and 26" would be about right.

Re: Wong questions???

I believe the 5/8 bands daryl sent me with my 55in gun were 28" and 27" and I use two 5/8ths on mine.

Re: Wong questions???

Thanks for the quick responses Bill and HurricaneBK... mine is a rear handle plus, so it should have the same band strech as a midhandle. I want to try two 5/8 bands because thats the material I have. Would two 5/8 band overpower the gun, or will it shoot simmilar to 3 5/16 bands?

Bill, thats great fish in your avatar, im glad to own the same gun...I used it on saturday and got a very nice cubera, but the pic is to large and cant attach it to this tread...

Re: Wong questions???

I have a rear plus as well and 2 5/8ths shot about the same as 3 9/16ths when I tried them, I prefer the 2 5/8ths because its faster to load. I actually think 2 5/8ths will be less power than 3 9/16ths I'm not sure what you're shooting with it but my gun has been plenty powerful for around Miami.

Depending on who you ask, 9/16" are 80 pounds each and 5/8" are 100 pounds, so the two 5/8" would be less power than the three 9/16".

Re: Wong questions???

Aloha Irie spearo,

To answer your question you can use either size bands. It just depends on how much you want to power up the gun. For instance, as Bill M noted, the 9/16 vs 5/8 in the same lengths have different amounts of pull needed to load. On average, the normal amount of band pull is about 65-80lb. The one advantage of the 9/16 bands is that it has a smoother release. There is no way you can overpower a hybrid with two 5/8 bands. So if you have 5/8 bands shoot away! I shoot my hybrid 55 with 26,27 5/8 bands while many of my dive buddies use 27,28in 5/8. If you want more power, shorten the band and use a loading tab.
I shoot my gun one handed.
Congratulations on getting Kip's gun. It was in great shape and you will have a blast shooting it. Let me know if you have any problems with rigging or setups. The lifetime waranty is on the gun no matter who owns it.

Hey stop by at the "blue wild" dive expo and say hello. Bill will be there along with a ton of Spearboarders. Its in your back yard in Ft Lauderdale.
Here's the link. www.thebluewild.com I'll be doing a band tying seminar and you can make your own 5/8 bands.

Aloha Daryl

Re: Wong questions???

Thanks for posting the picture Bill, I usually shoot these with a jbl 38 special xhd I have for very murky water, but I had to try the new gun, even in murky water I could still maneuver it very well, but I did buy it for clear water. Thanks again, I really apreciate it!

Aloha Daryl,

Yes, the gun came in extremely good contition and looks like...well, a masterpiece, as do all of your guns! Thanks for the information on the 5/8 bands, I will try the 26, 27 config. and see how that goes. Thanks also for the heads up about the blue wild dive expo, I purchased a ticket a couple days ago, wouldn't miss it for the world. Hope to meet you all there. Aloha!
