Breakwall Clean up.
After reading of all the epic conditions that people have been reporting on, I decided to check out the ocean and maybe sneak in a dive after working on the yard all day. I drove down to Oside harbor and noticed six inch waves lapping gently up against the break walls and went home to get my gear. I checked the tide charts and saw that the next high tide was going to be at 10:49 and had a nice dinner with the wife. She understands my insanity to leave the warm house at that hour and jump into the cold water, just as I understand her passion for shoes. I don't really, but I say I do as she puts up with me, and that's a lot.
Got loaded up and launched the boat at nine and went to one of the spots you normally can't get to because of wave action. Water was a bit on the cold side, but the air temp was 70 and very warm. As I got close to the rocks, I could see antennae sticking out of almost every crack. And all the bugs seemed to be hanging in two to three feet of water. I picked up an easy limit in twenty minutes of diving. I did a double check at the boat as in the heat of the moment I lost count of how many I tossed in the bag. I planned a two hour window to dive, so I decided to explore some other areas and dive. I managed to pull two trapped hoop nets out of the rocks. I found several others, but they were wrapped up and buried at the base of the rocks. I saw several bugs in the 5-6 lb range way back in spots that they knew they were safe. Explored and checked all kinds of spots. Dove around and picked up various junk and deposited it in the trash can at the dock. But the good part was the lack of Hoopnetters. I was taking trash up to the dumpster and was looking to give away the found nets, and the parking lot was empty at 10pm. As nice as it was, there were no netters out. I only had one boat come by me at all and it was a commercial guy coming in. Even when I was changing out of my wetsuit, the warm Santa Sna breeze felt great! I was loading up the boat in my wetsuit bottom and no shirt on and it felt warm and dry. Total for the night, Seven bugs, two hoopnets, two game bags full of bottles, cans and other trash. Conditions are epic, go now! |
