Is the scrambler XT a good diving yak?

Is this yak a good boat for diving in the ocean? There is one for sale near me.

It is a nice kayak for tooling around or maybe scuba. But for freediving, I would think that you would need at least one large enclosed hatch to put all of your gear, like guns, and extras. If you don't have a large hatch and just strap your equipment down, you have an increased risk of losing your equipment in the event that you flip the kayak. But that is just my opinion. I don't like taking the chance of losing my gear to a rouge wave.

The Scrambler XT does have a large oval gaspachi hatch (18"x10") in the front, and a smaller round one in the middle. Isn't the easiest for cramming guns or other long articles inside really, my 75cm will barely fit due to the footwells and rod mounts, but overall it is a good boat. May feel a little cramped if you're over 6" or 225lbs.

You are talking about the Scrambler XT Angler. This one would work much better if this is the one he's talking about.

Hi Yaker:

I had 4 Xts for my family. The XT is a good stable Yak but, a Tug to paddle. I would go with a Scupper Pro for longer Trips. The Pro is a Little tippy but, you'll get use to it.
I used them for Ab Diving/Fishing at VanDamm and Mendocino Co.

My wife used to have a scramble XT and it is indeed a tug to paddle, even short distances, and it doesn't carry much either. The Scupper Pro is an awsome boat, but some folks find it just too tippy. A compromise, and what I bought two of for my boys, (that I steal constantly for freediving), is the Prowler. It can be had in either 13' or 15 foot lengths. I have the 13's and at 6-1/185, I find it very stable for me and all my gear. Paddles fairly fast as well.
Bottom line is you need to paddle some boats before you buy. Makes a big difference and what works for some sucks for others.
