new to spear fishing

Hello everybody. The name is Tim Wilson, My friends call me fathead do to the abnormally large head I have. Anyways, I went spear fishing in Hawaii in December 2007 and was instantly hooked on the sport. Growing up in San Diego I used to snorkel and this became natural to me. My first shot was my first kill. I got 2 good size black trigger fish. I was told they tasted bad but I cooked em up pretty well i thought. Shot at a Jack and skimmed his head. Like I said before this sport just grew on me. I live in Humboldt California, so if there is any nor cal people that wanna show a newb the ropes I would gladly appreciate it.

Oh and Patrick is my hero.

Welcome Tim.

Look up Kirby,
Good guy/diver that goes to Humboldt State and lives up there during the school year.

As you have probably seen, the diving around the Humboldt area can be poor due to the heavy seas and bad vis this time of year.

Good luck and when you head south to the Mendocino areas let me know, those are my stomping grounds.

Re: new to spear fishing

Welcome to the board!
I would have shown you the humboldt mud pools if I still lived there.
Keep you eye on the water at all times, when it gets good (3-7ft vis) it will only last a few days (or hours), but there are fish and a few abalone if you really hunt hard.
There are a few freedivers associated with the HSU SCUBA program as well that might be helpful, and check out humboldt skin divers club.

Best advice I can give is hit the road south at 7am and be in the water at Fort Bragg by 10:30AM, much better visibility as well as far more abundant abalone. Enjoy Humboldt, it is wonderful. Peace.

Re: new to spear fishing

Thanks for the advice. I look up Kirby and I am actually on the scuba class right now and have met a few people. My fiance went through the program with all my T.A.'s so I know them as well.

Yes Pat I still have that car but, not for long. I am getting my grandparents Cadillac. sell that and get a 4x4 Toyota and I'll be set.

Thanks again for the advice.
