Re: Jbl slip tips

My friend just got one. He hasn't used it yet but for the price it doesn't look to bad. Should get the job done. You may want to recrimp the cable, thats about it.

Re: Jbl slip tips

as far as the second one goes don't buy it. i bought two and put them on pole spears and both broke on the first shot.the seat where the tip is made of of a crappy metal and it snapped. the second one didn't deploy and with the o ring on it made it imposible to pull it off. took vice grips and actually broke the seat off the threaded part. save some hassle and buy a tip from a company that actually takes pride in there gear.

Re: Jbl slip tips

Ive used a couple JBL tips similar to those (not quite the same) on a few polespears, and i know people who do use em on guns. Only problem to me is that they dont toggle at all, you have to give it a slight tug for the tip to disengage from the seat. Not too much of a problem on a polespear at all, and rarely is on a gun. They stay sharp pretty well and are easy to sharpen. If you get one id say set it up with a Mori style slidering, remove the o-ring and put a 1/8" long piece of polespear rubber or surgical rubber over the end of the shaft and tip cable. This holds it on better but doesnt hold it up upon removal.

Cant beat the price!

Re: Jbl slip tips

What Roberto said.

They're inexpensive enough to not care about shooting around rocks, and into the ground for halibut. They sharpen easy, and I've changed the wire to 7x7 SS that's more flexible, Spectra would probably be better.

If price is the issue, they'll get the job done with slight mods.
Cheers

Re: Jbl slip tips

I've used both in the past. If the gun is strong enough to push them through the fish they work fine. Don't like being shot inot rigs and rocks too much though.
Keep the O-ring lubed and they work well on guns. I also know folks who use them on flounder in the GOM where there is almost always a sand or mud background.

Re: Jbl slip tips

I use the 5" models for all my guns and have killed several fish over 100 lbs. with them. In fact most of the Hell Divers use the same tip, as they are always at my house trying to get me to drill their shit out.

I modify the whole thing. We use a different kind of adapter, and have actually gotten the adapters made out of Navy Grade Titanium. Then I run a 5/16" drill bit into the tip, with a drill press, and make the hole much deeper. If it fits down snug on the adapter we don't bend the adapters as often.

If you use the adapter that comes with the tip, take the o-ring off and throw it away. Make your cable longer so you can tuck it into the bands, this will keep your tip from falling off when you aim down.

Re: Jbl slip tips

I have been using these tips for a long time. The tuna in my avatar were taken with such a tip (4") and it was 265Lbs.

As FredT said, the tips are not so good when the shaft doesn't go all the way through, I have lost several fish due to tearing, but I haven't lost a single fish that I have seen the shaft go all the way through.

I remove the oring and tie a dacron line to the cable, I tuck the dacron into the bands. I have lost fish because the oring wouldn't release the tip.

Re: Jbl slip tips

I have used the ones you show with limited success. I think they would work better if you play with them a little like Rok does.

I prefer the JBL #823 tip with the wings for Scuba diving. It seems to deploy and hold better on regular sized snappers and groupers in the 5# to 30# range. Still, I have never had it malfunction on larger fish.

The weakest point of the JBL gear is the 6mm thread. They make most of the stuff in 5/16" now, but you have to request it.
