First Permit 4/4

Headed out early on my boat for the first time in over a month Hit up the reef and got swept a couple hundred yards down current pretty fast so my buddy and I made the decision to drift the rest of the day. Around 10 am I shot an ~40 lb cobia right through the top of the head and out the other side but somehow he managed to wriggle off Needles to say I was frustrated and about the only relief was getting back in the water.
We continued drifting for another 6 hours or so before I saw the flash of a tail under some rocks. I dove down to investigate and this guy was down there. Shot him once and he went crazy bending my shaft against the rocks so I got another gun from the boat and shot him again. The permit went 26 pounds, not bad for my first one. Seas were 1-2 and vis was top to bottom in 50 feet. The cobia and the permit were the only two legal sized fish I saw all day and between my friend and I we drifted close to 10 miles.

Nice job. Sucks about the cobia and shaft.

I've always wanted to wait for a day with current going north and drift from government cut to haulover... anyone ever do that?

We drifted from about two miles south of triumph all the way back to fowey almost, doubling back over area that looked good. Mostly between 30-60 feet of water.

I found it kinda chewy, flavor was good though. I probably could have done a better job cooking it though... I've had it in a couple seafood restaurants down here and it tasted great.
