Blue Water spearfishing in Miami

Now that finally the weather is starting to get better, I will like to plan a blue water spearfishing trip.

I have my speargun with reel and a hardfloat ready and would like to know if anyone would be interested in sharing boat/gas costs.

I typically lauch off Matheson Hammock and would entertain ideas on locations and other details.

Re: Blue Water spearfishing in Miami

First off: Does anyone have a boat. It sounds like Marine Jor does and I do too, so there's 2 options. Depending on the day gas would be better on his boat (and I'd be happy to pay) but if the waters rough we can take mine...

Second: Spots and experience: I have not only not ever been blue water spearfishing but I don't even know where to start. I would think:
1)Troll until we found something then hop in and chum to keep them there
2)put out a sea anchor and just chum the shit out of the water, block and live
3)Find a weed line and hop in
4)pray?

Third and least important: Speargun: I have my dads old gun and I need to buy new bands for it anyway but I would need a reel and a float, OR, someone to lend me their gun (preferred).

I get back in a week or so and im sooooo down!

Re: Blue Water spearfishing in Miami

i have my 120cm gun which should suffice and I can bring my 54 biller floridian for anyone else to use if their gear is lacking. I also have two short float lines- one is 60ft, the other 40', so someone could use the shorter one and have some rope after it.

I say your suggestions are dead on...we troll and look for birds and weeds and if we find anything, we jump in an shoot it

By no means am I an expert but here are a few pointers... You could look for hi spots or places that are holding bait fish... When you find the bait you will usually find the pelagics... Look for birds diving on bait or bait fish boiling. Something is pushing them up. If you find a hi spot I would work it with a flasher usually one guy jigs the flasher up and down for awhile why the other guy dives down to about 30 feet or so and hang out... Repeat. Then switch off.

Weed lines are good cover for bait fish.. You usually find Dorado around them.

You want something with range usually for bluewater. 120cm gun on the short end. I like a 140cm

Good luck

Re: Blue Water spearfishing in Miami

Ive never seen anything while bluewatering off miami. had much better luck/action in the keys. doesn't mean I still don't try. last 3 trips have been bluewater trips where nobody saw anything the entire day, trip before that I blew a shot at a nice wahoo by scaring them away like fool. im getting cynical and ready for a reef trip of killing little muttons and yellow jacks again.

if you're going south id go out really far...you can get into deeper water faster (ie the stream) going north. the stream comes closest as you get towards west palm. I would just run and gun covering as much ground as you can till you see something good. just jumping in randomly and chumming/flashing hasn't worked for me. any fish i've seen out in bw was withing 10-15minutes of jumping in so don't waste too much time at each spot. Finding fish out there (spearfishing wise) is very hard, I'm always up for a day starring into empty blue, burning tons of gas, and not seeing anything. plus i've got some sweet new flashers I've been wanting to try out.

ive got a 130cm apex with a mori sliptip. just orded a 64inch fullyenclosed wood gun to get down to business with this summer, sick of ripping of hoos and not reaching them.

Spend the time (and gas money) looking for something, preferably a log or other floating debris, its worth it!

I'm not presently in miami but we probably want to delay this until we start getting big reports that the mahi and game fish are out there and where...
