Team Spearit went out for a practice run/scouting mission for the upcoming tournament. Departing early Sunday, solid 2 - 4 foot seas subsided to near calm conditions by later in the day. Hit three quality spots ranging from 130 up to 80 feet a little more inshore. Water temps were a balmy 70 degrees offshore and toward the lower 60's inshore (80 foot).

Now for the report, as a boat we picked up our recreational limit on lobsters, including two that we feared could eat the smaller ones...one attacked Mark (screen name Hogfish), ripping his mask off before being subdued (insert mental image from original movie "Alien"). Total on fish, 4 Hogs, 3 Gag Grouper, 1 Scamp, 1 Yellowmouth & a variety of smaller species.

All in all, a great day...these pictures are of the first dive, same spot.

Even the water looked good. Wow, what a great day all around. There seems to be alot of bugs up there. Maybe worth a trip

Just give us a call. Lots of fish and bugs with no closed lobster season. I'll post a pic tomorrow of a nice bug one of my meg divers got today, and they'll probably get more tomorrow as we're gonna hit a new section of ledge.

You said MEG divers does that mean they are diving for sharks teeth ?

Trip 5-6
No bugs today, though the charter said they were there along with some nice Hogs. The group just wanted megs and they did alright. This is the 2 day take(May 5 and 6) from a section of the ledge covering a distance of about 100yds in 4 dives.

Do they use that scooter to blow the sand or to look around ?
Most of the teeth look to have been above the sand do you get the clay layer up there? The bugs are making me hungery!

Most of the groups are finding the megs either right on top or just under the sand layer so they can be uncovered by hand fanning. This was one of my regular groups and the leader likes to use the scooter to blow holes. The spot where they're diving for megs is about 35 miles offshore so there's no clay.

Hey Spearit,
Are the guys using lights? When Bill first told me about this spot he commented on the good vis but in the same breathe he said you needed a line to tie off to the anchor line in order to find your way back. Bill's perspective on "good" vis is much different from mine since he normally just dives the Cooper. It's like diving in black coffee there.

They're using the reels so not all 6 are going in the same direction off the anchor. Vis out there was 60ft plus till we had about 6in of rain in 3 days. Yesterday it was 30-40ft and getting better. By July/Aug it'll be 60-80ft unless the storms come. It's hard to break those Cooper river Braile divers of old habits but if things are right they can look up and see the boat bottom.
