Why the slide ring?

Why do we use slide rings on out slip tips? They make larger holes in our fish, pieces of flesh can get wedged between them and the shaft causing the tip to not detach, they require a larger adapter so they dont slide off your shaft (unless there is a shoulder) and they cost money! Why doesnt everyone just drill a hole in the adapter and route the line through there?

Or why not just omit the adapter and drill a hole through the shaft? That's what I did back in the mid 1950s.

I can think of two reasons. If you are using cable, then its sticking out of the shaft at a 90° angle, causing a lot of drag and resistance to penetration.

And a hole through the shaft weakens it. It might snap as a fish turned.

Re: Why the slide ring?

So spectra and an adapter sound like a viable combination. Im not too worried about a shaft snapping. Most euro shafts have holes through them.

Re: Why the slide ring?

a bigger hole is not allways a bad thing it causes more trama to the fish so it dies faster .also if u are worryed about the size of the hole the fish u are shooting are too small for a slip tip

Im not worried about anything along those lines. I would like to try my hand at making a slip tip and im trying to design it. The way I figure there is no point in wasting $8 on a slip tip. Does anyone see a reason why its worth it?

The slide ring allows interchangeability between shafts and slip tips made by different manufacturers. Sort of an industry standard.

That's it? If so im not too worried about not putting one if I make a tip.

the other reasons for the ring are : it acts like a swivel to help prevent kinks in the cable (if using cable) ,it is paralell to the shaft so the line or cable plays out much smother than a hole drilled threw the shaft.to ring giges the line 2 ways to play out (if there is a wrap or electric tape 4" back from the tip) (1 )line can slide threw the ring if the ring sticks on the shaft ,( 2 ) ring can slide up the shaft if the line snags on the ring, no potentaly sharp edges like a hole drilled at a angle in the shaft , if u weld the rings yourself rings only cost around $.50 , drilling the shaft weakens the shaft by around 40%. what is cheaper a $8 ring or a $80 shaft that will bend 4" from the tip the first time the line snags. if u drill the shaft u need to put a large on the tip to pull the tip off the shaft to overcome the drag on the line caused by the non paralell hole in the shaft 45 is the best u will get and that will effect acuracy

Man, hit up South beach, there alot of foreign girls on "work/travel" program!

bottom line, yes you can avoid slide ring by drilling hole in the adapter but then whatever (cable/spectra) it is it will be hanging off it and increase drag in the water.

Re: Why the slide ring?

Honestly, I think $80 for a slip tip is cheaper than all the time spent on r&d for a new design. And for that kind of investment, what diff is $8 more for a slide ring?

I have an idea just keep reading everyone's post on their experiences, and rewrite them as your own extensive knowledge

Yeah South Beach is just one of those places .

Which part do you think will increase the drag? The line looping when its dragged through the water?

Im not worried. I think I can gauge what will work and what wont. Worst case scenario i loose a few fish.
