San Diego campsites?

I'm planning a trip down to San Diego for late July. Can anyone recommend some good places in the area for camping?

How about South Carlsbad State Beach? Better make reservations real soon though. They book out fast. Had our reservations made 8 months ago.

Re: San Diego campsites?

There are areas you can camp in Mission bay, and there are several state parks and campgrounds. Most are back inland a bit. The mission bay thing is pretty cool, you can drive a boat right to the campsite!

Mission bay website seems to say you can't. Am I perhaps looking at the wrong website?:

It is unlawful for adults to camp, sleep overnight or lodge overnight in Mission Bay Park.

Campland On The Bay is what Rojo is suggesting. There's no camping anymore on Fiesta Island, and you have to leave by 10pm...the good part is, you can run dogs off-leash at Fiesta Island.

The inland parks are OK, like the one at Mission Trails, or Santee Lakes off the SR52.

If you're military, try MWR, killer deals.

Cheers

Re: San Diego campsites?

Campland would be a good bet if you can get in.
All the beach sites go on sale EXACTLY six months in advance at the first of the month and are sold out in 5 minutes. I don't know how he got Carlsbad 8 months out, I'd sure like to know...been going there over 20 years and it's getting next to impossible to get in during the summer.

Other places come to mind are Santee lakes and Mission trails which are a 15 minute straight shot down Hwy 52 to La jolla.
There's also a KOA in Chula Vista that 2 miles from the CV Marina, but that the back bay.

Re: San Diego campsites?

Lake Jennings has openings, it is 45 min inland. Nice place, good shore fishing with nice skiff rentals. You can tell Ranger Hugh I recommended you if you go.
