Question Diving Barnegat Inlet

Does anybody ever dive inside the inlet during the week. Where do you enter? Is it even worth the effort?

Re: Diving Barnegat Inlet

Read #6, under Barnegat Provivions, and try to find a "buddy" who knows the drill down there. Thats really all I can tell you, other than be careful, and good luck.

Red face Re: Diving Barnegat Inlet

Looks like these were updated late September of 2008:

"c) Provisions for Barnegat Inlet are as follows:

1. Except as provided in this subsection, no person or persons shall, while engaged in gogglefishing, spearfishing or skin diving, enter into any navigable channel or approach within 200 feet of any boat anchored or underway within the water adjacent to the land areas of the Borough of Barnegat Light.
2. No person shall dive in any of the waters of the Barnegat Inlet channel.
3. Skin and Scuba diving is permitted from the north and south jetties, but no person shall dive further than 25 feet from the rock jetty or bulkhead within the inlet.
4. No person shall dive within Barnegat Inlet between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Saturdays and Sundays from June 1 to September 30.
5. A diver shall mark his or her position with a float and skin diver’s flag.
6. Only "buddy diving" shall be permitted in the Barnegat Inlet.
7. Recreational diving is prohibited within 100 feet of the north monument.
8. Recreational diving is prohibited within the inlet when the current is a flood."

Number 4 is disturbing - did a diver get run over last year, and what does "within Barnegat Inlet" include in this case? If you can't spearfish the Inlet on weekends, guess we'll have to wait for fall and winter, when the biggest stripers show up in late October and November! Well, there's always the jetties somewhere outside the Inlet until then I guess....

Re: Diving Barnegat Inlet

I dive there all the time. actually headed there in about ten minutes. If you go in off the south jetty you have to either go in off the rocks or walk all the way down to the beach. If you decide to go off the rocks, you have to go in east of where the concrete side walk ends.

Re: Diving Barnegat Inlet

Dive the south jetty alot to

Just remeber to enter the water where the concrete ends (from the concrete back to the light house is state prorpety, they kind of frown upon people who dive in that zone)

Also DO NOT DO ANYTHING STUPID

Cause you'll make all of us look bad, I aint trying to be an a-hole or smart ass or what not, but we have been having a few problems with some spearos there latley

Remember its up to us to keep the sport going by our actions and not get a bad rep otherwise it will get banned

Thanks to everyone. I agree that it only takes only a few to screw it up for everyone. If we don't police ourselves, we doom the future of our sport. Intergrity is doing the right things all the time, even when no one is watching.

Don't be afraid to hang out in the deep holes. I just pulled a 34 and 36" bass out of there yesterday
