Re: Beaver Lake Arkansas spearfishing tournament,Aug 15th.

I have all the extra info made up we are just waiting for the other staff member to read and agree before they are posted. They should be up in the next few days if not later on tonight.

We will be having the check in, weigh in and awards out of the South parking lot at the Dam site swim area on Beaver Lake. It is the one just before the dam itself.

At the moment the prize table is to be determined but so far two of the local dive shops have gave verbal approval for donations.

Re: Beaver Lake Arkansas spearfishing tournament,Aug 15th.

Some questions were asked that I thought were good ones.

Yes you can win more than one category. If you are good enough then you can win all three. You cannot take more than one place in the same category though, one fish per diver per category.

I understand that requiring the fish to be gutted is not normal tournament rules. The thinking behind the rule is that being on the water for 6 hours could lead to spoilage. That is also why we are not doing a point per fish per pound tournament. In an effort to prevent meat waste we decided that gutting would be required and that icing would be recommended.

ETA: 7-18-09: After further research we will not be requiring the gutting of fish. There is some question about the state laws. State law states that you must leave the body of water but no one is sure if that means just getting off the boat or if you must be a certain distance away from the water. I am waiting on the game and fish commission to clarify this matter. In the mean time we will change the rules in a effort to comply with the state regulations. We will have a bold sign on the signup table to remind everyone of the rule change.

Re: Beaver Lake Arkansas spearfishing tournament,Aug 15th.

Here are some links to help you out. The tourney will be held right next to the dam on HWY 187, right down the road from C&J sports. If you can find the dam we will be the first recreation area North of it. We will be the portable pavilions set up at the south parking lot. C&J has motel rooms available and if you are in a large group they have two bunkhouses with showers. They are probably close to if not the cheapest around on lodging. They also sale food and beverages on site. They do rent a boat but you will need to see if it is already reserved.

Any of the local marinas have boats and if you ask them for directions to the dam they can all tell you. The lake is a "dead" lake with no vegatation growing in it. The thermocline is usually around 25 feet at this time of the year. Water temp can be bathtub warm at the surface and in the 60's below the thermocline. Vis depends on the lake at the time. I expect that we will have 10-15 the day of the tourny since that is the normal.

Re: Beaver Lake Arkansas spearfishing tournament,Aug 15th.

The tournament site is not that far from downtown Eureka Springs.

Here is the address to CandJ sports: www.candjsports.com . A quick mapquest from your starting point will give you accurate directions.

11792 Hwy. 187
Eureka Springs, AR 72631.

The check in and weigh in area is on the road North from them. Coming from the North on HWY 62 you will turn South on HWY 187, 2.5 miles after you turn you will see the swim area, the lake and Beaver dam. Turn into the swim area, pay your day use fee at the small check-in kiosk and then take a left into the South parking lot, we will be set up on the end. If you want to go to CandJ's continue on HWY 187 a few more miles and you will see them on the side of the road. The store and swim area are hard to miss. If you do get lost HWY 187 will loop back around and connect with HWY 62 again.

This swim area is easy to find. HWY 187 goes directly over the top of the dam and the swim are is right next to the dam. You turn off of HWY 187 directly into the swim area parking lot.

Re: Beaver Lake Arkansas spearfishing tournament,Aug 15th.

Dennis from 20fathoms WWW.20fathoms.com donated an excellent set of Carbon Fiber fin blades and a very nice Pelaj Boonie hat to the prize table.

Dano from Mako spearguns WWW.Makospearguns.com donated a float/dive flag set up that I am very impressed with. It is a hard shell "Baywatch" style lifeguard float that a dive flag attaches to. I like it enough that I am considering ordering one for myself.
