Found One! / Not mine!

Went out Sunday morning with my neighbor Josh. Searched around La Jolla for nothing. Still lots of bait in the water, schools of Barricuda, but did not see anything. After a couple hours in the water I decided to head back to the boat. Water had a little chill to it. Josh was already back. He said he was still getting over a cold and was having trouble with his ears. No big deal I have been out the last two days, we can head in. Then he asks me if I know what kind of fish this scale came from, as he shows me one on his finger. Don't know but it looks bigger. Then the BASTARD opens up the cooler to reveal his prize. His first dive all season and he nails a 25# WSB after being in the water for 30 minutes. Said it just came cruising by. I don't want to take anything away from him because he puts in his time and is very knowledgeable. Right place at the right time.

Adios!

Cool 25# WSB

Woo-Hoo Josh! Nice one!
Glad you got the WSB before the seals did; they've been stealing catch lately, getting pretty aggressive about it.
A member of the SD FreeDivers lost his gun when a seal grabbed his fish and ran w/it....along w/his weight belt. The bull seal was spotted later feeding on a guesstimated #40 WSB.
2 seals came to say hello outside the kelp beds Saturday morning around 8AM.
Do you suppose they are learning this behavior?

Way to go, Josh!!!

Is it Harbor Seals or Sea Lions that are doing that?

Dogs

The sealions off La Jolla are brutal. They steal a ton of live bait while fishing and snag some decent fish while diving. They are constantly present and a real pain in the ass! The harbor seals are not a problem except for the fact that the rookery is getting bigger and bigger. It will not be long before those cute little pups start attracting some undesireable visitors looking for snacks.

Nice fish - I've read about WSB, they seem to be a preferred species to shoot in Southern Cal. What I want to know is.... How do they taste?

Carraig Sorry to take so long to answer: it's the Sea Lions that are doing this.
The SD Freediver who lost his gun is an experinced gentleman with a long history with that gun...like 15+ years.
Anyone finds it, I'm sure the owner would stand you a night of drinkin'.....At least!

BlueWaterRocket WSB are among the most tasty I've ever had. Among the best! ITA with Marcus/Chuam
