puerto santo tomas?

Hey my name is Eric from Long Beach, new to the board, kinda. I've looked at it from time to time. I'm just getting into spearing more seriously. I bought a comp 4 and looking to put it to use. This year I've only gone a handful of times, but have learned a bunch from some seasoned divers. I was fortunate to see 2 massive schools of sea bass at cat along with one yellow earlier this year. I reacted too abruptly and spooked all the fish. I have a lot to learn. Anyway I've got one halibut at cat and a nice calico at san clemente. I am looking to go down to puerto santo tomas fishing and possibly diving. Have any of you been there? Any advice for that area?

Re: puerto santo tomas?

Read this and PM the OP for details as he did not say it was PST, but that is the general location of the not so good part of the post. (south of Ensenada, north of San Quintin)

Vis sucks and cold. Not shittin' ya. all for helping the Mexican tourist operations stay open during this tough economy but unless you are H&L, this place is no good for spearos.

On the other hand, try it out. May be you'll be lucky and stumble on something but I sure as hell didn't.

Re: puerto santo tomas?

It has sucked serious ass every single time I've gone down there. Im not trying to hide any "secrets" or anything. If your trip is flexible go to san quentin or get a panga from ensenada. Or better yet go to the cortez side.

Even when I got WSB there it was never worth it, water gets cold fast down there and don't take any short cuts on foot unless you like rattle snakes.
The road up over the hill can flip a rig.
Cheers, Don

Re: puerto santo tomas?

Count on H&L fishing but take you dive gear as you never know. thick wetsuit too as it is sometime decent vis but always cold as Sheet. I've never had much luck diving but one time I missed the conditions by a few days as a group before me filled a boat with YT spearing on the solidad reef. Say hi to Sam for me. Donny

Last time I was there the road over the hill was fenced off?
I took my jeep up and over one time and had the whole area to myself. I woke up the next day and there was a Winnebago out there with me !
I asked him if there was another way in and he said 'Nope, I just go slow...'

That's funny maybe he had a H-1 winch him over, a long long time ago I had
J Riffe and two guys in a two wheel drive 1 ton ford Van. I knew I was in trouble
when everyone bailed out of the hopping off drop off side, this did not
help traction one bit. I managed to crawl out the pass window with one rear wheel hanging in air. I had to pile rocks under the wheels to keep from losing it.
Cheers, Don

Re: puerto santo tomas?

been going down to santo tomas for the last 15 years viz has never been less 25ft water is cold 5mm+ wetsuit. spring is great for wsb & some big goats and good yt as it warms up, the road to get over the hiil is closed its private property. if you camp at sams you will find a nice cove with a huge kelp forest just outside. i have speared 40lbs + wsb from shore walking distance from camp, go and check it out (take lots of beer and food make sure your car or truck has good tires)
