I dive in a 5mm all year and never get cold but many SoCal guys dive in a 7mm during the winter and a 5mm in the summer. It all depends on how susceptible you are to getting cold.

Re: Are 5mm wetsuits good for winter?
Hey man thanks for using the search function before asking your question. The answer isn't as simple as yes or no. What wetsuit will work in the winter has a great deal to do with water temp, your size, how old the suit is, how long you plan on staying in the water, and how sensitive you are to the cold. I use a 5mm in southern cal in the winter, but I'm 200 pounds and I'm used to diving the colder waters of northern cal. Remember the larger you are the longer it's going to take for you to cool off and the longer you're in the water the colder your going to get. If your suit is new it's going to keep you warmer than one that's been used for a long time. This is because an old suit has lost a good deal of insulation due to repeated compression. If your an average skinny 15 year old you might want to look for a thicker suit. The biggest thing to remember about a wetsuit is that if you get overheated you can always cool off by flushing water through the suit, but if you get cold there's nothing you can do to warm up but get out of the water.

If you are good with the cold and only plan to be in the water for an hour at a time, then a 5mm will be more than adequate.
I just recently got the 5mm Beuchat Mundial and love it. |

![]() I finally got myself a 7mm. Great for further north where I've dove my 5mm in 41 degree water and always get super cold. I just used the 7mm in PV last weekend in 70 degree water. No amount of suit flushing would cool me off. Then again, you are only planning on being in the water for 1 hour? Why even bother going? If you are going to spend money on expensive gear, use it. Put some time in and you'll get alot more out of your experience.
