Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

just found this in the barter section of SD craigslist...sounds like a good deal for people who need a boat ride...

Re: Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

i would assume this guy is a captain?

cuz asking for fish for payment is no different than asking for money....you can split the fuel costs, that has been discussed many times before. but if you ask for anything above current trip costs....then you are chartering...and you need to be a captain.

i would guess he is not a captain, or he would have put that in his name.

Seems shady. He says he doesn't charge you, but you pay for everything anyway? And you give him some of your catch.

I didn't want to start that whole discussion again. That's why I said it seems shady.

I'm also thinking that bartering of one's recreation catch would not be looked too highly upon by DFG or members of this board.

Re: Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

On our typical friends boats dont we pay for gas and when the captain gets skunked we all share fish? I know I hook the capt up all the time (Shh, dont tell DFG on me).

No different here. I would give the guy a chance. Nice find Ryan, hopefully someone who never gets out on a boat can take advantage.

Yes, it says he doesnt charge but you do pay for expenses. Whats different from a charter / professional boat is he's probably not making any income.Which in my eyes is a huge difference.

Re: Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

i sent the guy an email just to see what his motivation was since he's not making any income off the deal...like why would he want to take strangers out for just a little bit of the catch???
he said the boats are in riverside and his kids like to be on the boat so basically it helps give him an excuse to be on the water and save on the expenses. he said he's willing to take the boats anywhere from mexico to washington too.
paying for him to get down here from riverside doesn't make sense to me...there's enough fishing opps with people I enjoy going out with locally or from this board...but still thought it was worth posting. why not right...it's just another option that may fit somebodies criteria.

I think there is a clearly difference between hooking up a friend then from bartering recreational caught fish for services rendered(illegal) or accepting fish as payment for boat rides without a captain's license(illegal)

It's hard for me to believe you can't perceive the difference.

me eithier. Aside from the whole being illegal to barter rec. caught fish for services, for what you would have to pay the guy for gas to and from riverside, plus the unspecified boat expenses, you could go out with a legit, registered charter op like Leo's, where you KNOW everything is not only legal, but you also get to keep what you kill, and I doubt this craigslist guy'll clean your fish or carry your gear for you.

Re: Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

Wow, this guys is asking for big trouble form the Coast Guard. It's my understanding that anytime money changes hands you better be a licensed captain or your asking for trouble. I could be wrong, but I think the CG regards even asking for gas money as a "charter". That's why some boat owner don't ask for money ahead of time. They certainly won't refuse it when it's offered at the end of the trip but they keep it on the down low. Perhaps someone with more knowledge in this area could add a little more information.

No different here.

No different than picking up the entire tab for a stranger, and giving him fish/lobster as payment when he specifically stated he will not fish or dive?

Seriously? You don't see the difference? I bet a judge would. One is gifting to a friend who struck out, the other is payment for use of a boat.

Re: Interesting offer on craigslist- boat for "hire"

Christian, it is actually in the regs that it is illegal to sell or trade sport caught fish. I would cite the regs, but I am on my phone. Also, what kind of insurance does the guy have if someone gets hurt on his boat. I am trying to be objective about this, but it is pretty hard. I don't have another job, my boat is my business and when someone tries to take that away from me, well, you can imagine how that makes me feel. Anyway, you can justify it how you want, but without, at least his captain's license he is illegal. Not to mention the other things needed even if it is an uninspected vessel.

Very good point Leo. Besides, what kind of training and/or experience does this CL quack have anyway? I know that Leo has passed many safety checklists and has a requisite amount of documented on-the-water experience. Not just that..but who do you think knows an area better...some guy from Riverside...or a guy that lives in Oceanside and his boat is in the water...and he goes out almost daily....hmmmmm....I wonder!!!
