SB Superb Vis

Too busy to get out on Friday or Saturday, but managed to get the yaks out with my brother on Sunday and BOY was is worth it.

First time I have dove Carp Reef, and upon walking the yaks into the water I could tell right away the vis was gonna be EPIC! We got out to the reef, and you could see straight down in 20ft of water and see big starfish on the bottom. Tons of Dines and jack smelt swimming around as well.

We got in and the water was nice and blue with 25+ feet of Vis....just amazing. I dove for about 3 hours, and was having a great time just checking out all the life. Saw a lot of Calicos, Sandies, Horn Sharks, a few sheeps, corbina, octopus, and some lobsters. Took a calico and lob, for fish taco and lobster dinner....mmmhmh.

Talked to someone on the way in who took a horn shark, saying they are supposed to be good eating...especially as fish n chips...? Wouldnt have guessed that.

I hope it stays like this for awhile and cant wait to get back out. Sorry no pics.

Wow. Sounds like you hit Carp Reef on one of those magic days. That place is usually a mud pit. Congrats on the fish & bug.

Nice! This time of year I've seen it clear out there, but Hzrds_LOCal is right, its usually pretty muddy (better for H&L fishing). I was out there last week and it was like 2-3 feet!

Let's hope for more offshore winds and low surf for the remainder of the week. I could do this weather pattern until April, easy!

Yea no kidding the vis has been great!! Took out the yaks to ledbetter on sat and sun and had about 12'-15' of vis. As usual for that spot didn't see all that much of interest except for a couple of bat rays swimming through the kelp.

Yep. Tajiguas had about 20 ft vis today when I was there from 7-10. Place was dead though except for the huge 7 gill shark I saw cruising slowly beneath me. Thing had to be in the 8 ft range. Scared the crap out of me at first.

Saw some calico's that I passed up. No WSB, no halibut, no lobster.

I almost went to Tajiguas instead of Carp, but opted for a first time spot. Talked to a couple folks who saw a 7 Gill at Carp yesterday as well, about the same size.

I cant wait to get out again andI hate this time change crap...now its basically dark when I get off work.

Made a oor choice in diving Mesa Lane today. It was hard to see the water with all the fog rolling in which didn't help my decision any. It was Pea soup.

Yeah Carp Reef is an amazing place. I went there to start yesterday and then headed towards a couple spots near the working oil pier that are great bug spots and the vis was like you said epic. And yes I have seen 7 gills on numerous occasions at Carp reef. Take it easy good job on hitting it at the right time, since usually the salt marsh always creates a really murky dive there.

Re: SB Superb Vis

Went out last night for some lobsters. All the bigguns were holed up pretty well and didn't seem to be on the prowl. Tons of shorts and quite a few barely shorts. I saw a ton of legal size molts so I am thinking that a lot of the keepers were staying in the holes until their shells hardened up a bit. The two traps I saw were loaded with keepers, so maybe they snagged all the good prowlers. Only managed one keeper and one scallop although I saw a ledge loaded with about 30 scallops but the surge was bad and after I surfaced for a breath I couldn't seem to find it again.
